Excellent matchup. Both have their share of diehard fans... no pun intended. For me, it's The Big Sleep without question. Give me Humphrey Bogart as a private investigator in a confusing, tangled web of deceit over Bruce Willis as a cop stuck in building being terrorized.
Big Sleep is the better overall movie. Die Hard is one of my favorites and certainly improved the overall genre by adding comedy to action. Rickman is fabulous as the smart bad guy. Willis is his career defining role. All that being said, it's still Bogart, Bacall, and Big Sleep.
