The Countess vs. A Royal Affair

I guess these are both about hypocrisy among royalty, and how the agendas of others override the truth, or something. A Royal Affair is quite a bit better than The Countess because it drives home the conflict better, and the protagonists are more sympathetic. I wasn't sure whether Bathory in The Countess was supposed to be a villain or a victim, and the film doesn't offer a fleshed out enough portrait.
