Romancing the Stone was good for what it was, and played the Indiana Jonesish sense of adventure quite well. Jewel of the Nile added absolutely nothing new, and was completely unnecessary.

When I was a kid, I enjoyed these movies equally. Now, as an adult, I can see why Romancing the Stone is SO much better! The Jewel of the Nile was essentially a lousy remake. Notice the elevator music in the first film is replaced by the generic synthesizer music that was common in all 80's action/adventure films (and whose current equivalent is the current Hans Zimmer bombastic blather).
