Two of the best, most realistic WWII movies ever made. I'll go with the colder French one over the rawer Italian one due to its near absence of melodrama, which undermines a couple of the episodes of Paisan, but both are just outside my top 100.
Now both are just inside my top 100, and I think I've talked myself into giving Paisan the advantage for its ambitious and successful attempt to capture a nation's wartime experience geographically, culturally, and socioeconomically.
