Yeah, baby! I've seen both of these a few times over the years, and I'm fairly certain that Salo disgusts me much less than Sweet Movie. I've seen other DuĊĦan Makavejev films from around the same time period and found them to be quite enjoyable. Sweet Movie, though, is just nasty. Well, actually, that's only true of the latter portion where the people are vomiting and defecating and peeing. Sweet Movie starts out funny, albeit in a creepy sort of way, and then abruptly turns gross and offputting. If I had to compare the infamous dinner scene in Salo to the one in Sweet Movie in terms of nausea-inducement, Sweet Movie bugs me way more. In fact, Salo doesn't really bother me that much at all. Sweet Movie is a much more grating and unpleasant movie to get through, in my opinion. What I will say, however, is that Sweet Movie is a more interesting movie than Salo as far as the WTF? factor is concerned. Salo is a lot of torture and perversion, but it's not freaking nightmarishly nutso like Sweet Movie. I don't know. People throw out all kinds of interpretations for these flicks, but I think it's all bollocks. When it comes down to it, bad table manners is what loses this matchup for Sweet Movie. At least in Salo they eat the crap with some formality and refinement. Sadism and perversion I can deal with. But not the freak show free-for-all that Sweet Movie becomes. (NOTE: They should do a psychological study to determine what being more disturbed by Sweet Movie or Salo says about a person.)
