Two from the 40's that stand the test of time. Small edge to The Best Years, but man...I love 'em both.
I've never enjoyed Brief Encounter very much, actually. It's just missing that...well, something. The Best Years of Our Lives can get rather cheesy at times, but it's got heart and it tells a great story. It's definitely my favorite of the two...

Tough matchup. Both have a lot of heart, Brief Encounter has more depth, especially for a 1940's film.
