Erm, no. Both are among the most technically accomplished and realistic space movies of all time, but 2001 is completely cold and emotionless. It may be ahead of its time, both technically and philosophically, and it may be extremely influencial on the Science Fiction, but I feel absolutely dead and uninspired every time I watch it. Apollo 13 is my favourite film of all time, a perfect blend of entertainment and good filmmaking, and even after watching it thousands of times, I cannot find a SINGLE thing wrong with it. Apollo 13 wins by miles.

"2001 is completely cold and emotionless." man, you're gonna watch that scene with the monolith where that chorus builds up and builds up to an ear-splitting din, then just cuts off and leaves you like "!!! holy shit!!"--and tell me that's cold and emotionless?

It's interesting that these two movies have almost the exact same running time, yet one feels significantly longer than the other. Kudos to Apollo 13 for not being a ponderous, meandering wank.
