The Three Musketeers vs. The Pirate

Swashbuckling Gene Kelly! Two of his most underrated films, in my opinion. His acrobatics in The Three Musketeers prove that he didn't have to be singing and dancing to entertain, and the movie has a really superb cast--Van Heflin, Lana Turner, and Vincent Price are all outstanding. But it does languish in places. The Pirate should have been even better than it was; studio interference and Judy Garland's mental health forced it out of the shape Minelli intended. It's still damn good, though, with two great vocals from Judy ("Mack the Black" and "Love of my Life") as well as some of her funniest scene work, plus Gene in what my friends and I affectionately call "the booty shorts ballet." Maybe more uneven than 3 Musketeers, but all the more fascinating for it.
