Wow, the two best films of summer '09

The two best films of summer '09? Don't think so. You're forgetting (500) Days of Summer, District 9 and The Hangover. Would rate all three of those over these. Not that these films are not great in their own right. Up is among the animated greats and Inglourious Basterds is easily Tarantino's finest. Just, they don't match up with the films mentioned. Up is the victor of this matchup, though, by virtue of being up there in the company of movies such as Wall-E and Finding Nemo in terms of animated greatness. Nothing against Tarantino, but I just don't quite understand people's unfaltering love of the man and his work. Quality cinema, yes, but not worthy of such high praise.

I would actually say that inglorious basterds is the best movie of 2009 but up is good to

I agree 2 of the best films from 2009. Basterds for the win.

Each is guilty of meandering away from its best parts, but both have peaks well beyond the ususal fare. The scene of Shoshanna in red, the interogation above the hidden family, the huckster Aldo Raine are all marvelous and grand. But the quiet construction that starts off Up is delightful in its effeciency and devastating in its purity. Up's up.

It's been too long. I've got to see them both once more.

I'm usually on the Pixar boat, railing against Tarantino. In this case, Pixar dropped a total turd of a movie and Tarantino made on the best films of the year.

I really loved 'UP', but I do not think it's Pixar's best -- I'd put Ratatouille and Wall-E above it, and others like Finding Nemo and Toy Story. Inglourious Basterds was my favorite movie of '09. I've seen it at least 7 times and could go for more views. I do think they both rank among '09's best, however.

Couldn't agree with you less, Protozoid, sorry. I adore Up. My list of 2009 films that I've seen is far from comprehensive, but Up is easily the best of the lot. Beats Basterds by a long shot. IG is probably my favorite Tarantino film, but that doesn't say much, as I'm far from the biggest fan of the man's work.

Inglourious Basterds was a masterpiece. The best movie of '09. Up was good, but not as good as Basterds.

This is tough. Both are overrated imo. Love Pixar and QT, so if I wasnt to be biased I still wouldnt know which to choose. I think I'll go with Up cuz I recall I was more satisfied immediately after watching.

Inglorious Basterds, and it ain't so close. But here's the real question: which film had the better opening sequence/act? The taught, heart-pounding farmhouse scene of IB or the heartfelt, elegant life in summation of Up? (I'd still go Basterds, but it's much closer...)

@admiralpiett: I will say that the opening scene of Basterds was my favorite sequence in the film.

Up wins again.

Shit.

It's got a great title but I've never rated Tarantino. He does great individual scenes like the opening of Basterds but over the course of a film you start to notice him putting style ahead of story. Besides changing the ending of WW2 was a step too far even for him. Up is my personal favourite Pixar film and I'm a big fan so that's saying something. I can see it's a close competition for some people but it's an easy choice for me.

Up is the best animated film of 2009, but Inglourious is the BEST films of 2009.

I agree with alav.
