Impossible to choose! I feel so bad having to do it to these movies. Probably going to stay up all night deciding...

Not as tough as I thought this one would be. Wizard of Oz wins. The Sound of Music is full of great songs and joyous moments, but it can't match the Wizard of Oz as a piece of film. The black-and-white to Technicolor transition is jaw-dropping. The Wicked Witch with her flying monkeys is terrifying. The story is at once more simple and much more complex. And have you ever tried listening to Dark Side of the Moon while watching The Sound of Music? It *really* doesn't work.

Oz just feels too pantoish now (maybe prototypically so, but still). A good film, but not as enjoyable as the best musical ever made (not that there's much competition).

I would argue that West Side Story narrowly beats The Sound of Music out for Best Movie Musical Ever (and the fact that they're both directed by Robert Wise is probably not a coincidence). Of these two, Oz is certainly the more influential and the more important in terms of film history, but SoM has greater rewatch value for me, and I'll take Julie over Judy any day. Furthermore, I don't tend to judge movies by how well they go with Pink Floyd songs, but maybe I'm weird like that....

The Wizard of Oz is much better than The Sound of Music.

This is not a hard choice for me. The Wizard of Oz for the win! I'd rather be somewhere over the rainbow any day of the week.
