Hostel vs. Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance

Nice match-up, considering Roth's love of Park Chan-wook's movies. Both are brutal, brutal movies, but they're each brutal in their own way. I enjoyed Hostel. There, I said it. And I'm not ashamed of it. I had fun watching Roth play off of Americans' fear of being in strange, foreign places and I had a blast with the final act. But when you think Hostel, you think gore. And it is definitely one gory fucking movie. When you think Mr. Vengeance, you think of emotional brutality as well as physical. Or at least I do. That movie tugs at the heartstrings for two hours straight and refuses to let you go even days after it's over. Revenge is a relatable thing, but the movie's message still stands. It's got more to say and it's just a better movie, in general. So, as much fun as I had with Roth's movie, Sympathy wins, hands down.

I totally agree with everything ToryK said. The emotional punch of Sympathy beats the gory Hostel.
