Hmmm. The Mist.

[Rec] was pretty intense, and the ending possibly had me kind of scared, though I can't confirm that. The Mist was mostly just depressing and gruesome, without ever being entertaining. If I have to watch a guy explode with baby spiders, then the movie should at least make it a positive experience. That shit ain't cool.

Definitely gonna go with [REC] on this one. The Mist is good, but [REC] is definitely more intense and actually kind of horrifying at times. These days it's hard to find a horror film like this one that actually gives ya a scare, especially since most horror films today feel a need to incorporate too much humor that is often overdone.

As a rule, found footage horror films are quite mediocre. I've seen maybe four (including [Rec]) and none would be even slightly above average. [Rec] may well be the best of a bad bunch, but that's hardly saying a lot. The first half of the movie sort of plods along with nothing of interest happening. In fact, I don't think the movie becomes in any way entertaining until the little girl loses her shit. From that point on it seperates itself out from you Blairs and your Paranormals. Sadly, the lead character in [Rec] (the chick reporter) happens to be an obnoxious cunt for much of the film. The Mist has its fill of obnoxious characters too, but to me the film seems to be condemning the general stupidity of people you're likely to meet on a day to day basis. I totally got a kick out of the offensive cynicism.
