The Comedy of Terrors vs. The Raven

The Raven and The Comedy of Terrors are horror comedies that have basically the same cast (Vincent Price, Peter Lorre, Boris Karloff) and, I believe, production company. I actually think the three actors I mentioned may have been better served by The Raven -- Price was miscast as the straight man in CoT, and Lorre is just hilarious in The Raven. Karloff is just great in both movies, and this really shows off his versatility: he plays a deaf old caretaker in CoT, a purely comic part, and an evil sorcerer in TR, where he brings a touch of dignity to the proceedings. Overall, though, CoT is the cleverer movie, and the belabored connection to the Edgar Allen Poe poem hurts rather than helps The Raven. Add in Basil Rathbone's hilarious performance and this has to be a win for Comedy of Terrors.
