Gaslight vs. Gaslight

The unnecessary remake is more famous (mostly because MGM tried to have the 1940 prints destroyed !), but it doesn't hold up to the original if you see the first one first (probably why MGM tried to do that). So much of the original that is mysterious, the remake just comes out and says early in the movie. Which makes most of the remake sort of predictable and obvious. All that, and the original film is also spookier and more atmospheric. Not even close.

The remake is so much more detailed, which makes the story more engrossing. The 1940 version pales in comparison.

Bergman and Boyer outclass all. Pure greatness.
