The American lost me by the end. The movie wasn't anything new, but I've seen that sort of ending before and it was a letdown. Trespass is even less original. At least assassin films are about, you know, assassins. So that's always a plus. George Clooney killing people is fine. Home invasion crime thriller family dramas, however, usually aren't that interesting. So, The American wins.
