Watch some more of Wes Anderson. Looking at your list I see you ignored him a little. He's excellent!

Cleckley, you seen Bangkok Knockout yet?
Cleckley on 5/29/2011 Reply · Like · (0 likes)
No man. I want to see it but it's not out on DVD or Blu-Ray here (this is a movie that I don't want to rip it online - I need a crytal clear pic). It looks exciting from the trailers but did I detect some wire-work? Alos, I worry that it might turn out like Born To Fight with 70% bullshit, 20% action and 10% so idiotic it's funny. But Thailand are makin' waves. Quite a few projects from Yanin and Jaa apparently. Heard they might even work with Sammo!
ToryK on 5/29/2011 Reply · Like · (0 likes)
I've heard the same. Can you imagine? Sammo's choreography would take Jaa's game to the next level. About BKO, I'm thinking about just buying the Thai DVD. Sure, it's got no subs, but the DVDs I bought for Born to Fight and TYG didn't have any subs either, and I followed the movies just fine. And from what I've heard, it's got a shitty story and the acting is supposed to be terrible (so idiotic it's funny), but it's supposed to have topped BTF in the action department.
I'm willing to wait. BTF was a disappointing experience so I'm not in urgent need of a second fix. Nothing happened in that film for the better part of an hour. But the conclusion was something bizarre; it was 'so bad it's good' AND genuinely brilliant all at once. Never seen anything so bizarre. When the hostages all got up to sing the National Anthem I was in stitches. When the guy with one leg started kicking ass I was floored from both laughter and awe. If BKO is anything like that (with much, much less screen time devoted to all the unecessary talky/story crap) then it'll be awesome. If you do see it soon, you've gotta let me know how it is. Also, out of curiosity, are you a fan of MA flicks because you are/were a fighter/practitioner yourself?
ToryK on 5/30/2011 Reply · Like · (0 likes)
No, not at all. Most kids get into whatever they're going to be into when they're around 6, right? Rumble in the Bronx hit the States when I was in the first grade. I loved it, so I latched on to Jackie Chan and I've been a fan ever since. I'd just rather watch the stuff HK has to offer over some of the crappy stuff we get here.
Cleckley on 5/31/2011 Reply · Like · (0 likes)
Yeah, I hear that.
ToryK on 6/5/2011 Reply · Like · (0 likes)
Just found out that BKO is hitting the US on August 30th and the UK on July 4th as Knockout.

On the contrary, every BisonDollah will be worth five English pounds. At least that is the exchange rate the Bank of England will set when I kidnap their Queen! ;)Thanks for the add! You'd probably like Dr. Strangelove best from the films left in your unseen top 100! =)

Some friendly advice: DO NOT buy Bangkok Knockout. If you absolutely have to see it, Netflix that shit. Otherwise, I wouldn't bother.
NM. Went to rank it and realized you've already seen it.
ToryK on 9/10/2011 Reply · Like · (0 likes)
Oh God, don't get me started. The Tai Chi guy was sick, as were a couple of the other fighters. But they clearly put the wrong guy in the lead role, the love triangle was beyond stupid, and what was with all that nonsense at the beginning? Fuck, it took forever for the thing to get started. When the cage fight finally came, I thought I was in for a fun movie, but other than the aforementioned Tai Chi guy, it all went downhill really, really fast. The action would have to be absolutely INSANE for the movie to redeem itself after all the stupidity, but it just wasn't meant to be, I guess. I wanted to like it. I really did. But other than a few fun bits...*shudder* I'm probably being too hard on it, but it'll be a while before I watch it again to find out.
ToryK on 9/12/2011 Reply · Like · (0 likes)
If you want a pick-me-up after all the disappointment, do yourself a favor and give Merantau a look. I just watched it for the first time and it is damn good. I think it gives Jaa and Yen a run for their money for best MA film of the decade. The only thing I think you might hold against it is some of its fight scenes. Some of the earlier stuff can kind of blend together.
ToryK on 9/13/2011 Reply · Like · (0 likes)
I think I'd have to disagree with you there. I think it's juuuuust shy of being Jaa-quality, but I think it beats Yen's stuff. Had Yen and Yip stuffed SPL and Flash Point with a bit more action, then I might agree. But I don't think there's enough of it, as good as the action is, for me to choose them over Merantau. I was in Heaven for the last forty or so minutes of that movie. And I'm hearing that their next movie, The Raid, is the best thing in decades. Like, Hard Boiled-quality.
ToryK on 9/15/2011 Reply · Like · (0 likes)
You're not being an ass. Different strokes and all that, ya know? I'm not as big on MI:2 as I was when it came out. My excuse for loving it then? I was in the fifth grade. Now, not so much. But I dig Face/Off. I know it's corny and it has its flaws, but I actually think it's one of the better action movies of the 90's. Broken Arrow's dumb fun and so is Hard Target, but then again, I'm a sucker for Van Damme movies. At the end of the day, I'd put Face/Off at the top of heap as far his American stuff goes. Haven't seen Reign of Assassins, but I've heard nothing but good things. Now, his Hong Kong stuff is some of the sappiest, most corny stuff I've ever seen in my life. But I've always appreciated how black-and-white everything is in his movies. And I've always been touched by the male bonding. I know it bothers the more homophobic among us, but I think the two big reasons it doesn't bug me are 1) I'm not homophobic and 2) I'm very, very close to my kid brother. I've always seen the relationships in his movies as inflated, fatalistic versions of the way I feel about my brother...Shit, I'm rambling and I might find myself embarrassed after re-reading this. But Hard Boiled, male bonding aside, is in my top ten because it is the most balls out action movie I've ever seen in my life. Good God, what a movie. You should give it another look some time.

You know what, I actually meant to check I'll Sleep out after I saw Get Carter for the first time. Thanks for the suggestion. But yeah, I hear the suggestions of homoeroticism in reference to Woo's stuff (and other buddy movies, for that matter) all the time. I figure, people will see what they'll see and I move on. Whatevs. Good Will Hunting's too damn good not to watch due to some macho bullshit. I gotta admit though, the American Pie thing made me chuckle. I haven't seen it in a long time, so I can't really comment. But then again, people would probably laugh out loud if they knew about some of the stuff I find touching, so it's all good. And my kid brother'll be 17 next month. The 5-year gap seems a little weird for us to be so close, but the kid's always been pretty smart and he was an ace at Twisted Metal 4 by the time he was 4, so he's always been cool in my book. He likes to take shortcuts but he's got a good head on his shoulders and he's got a good heart. How far apart in age are you from yours?

Hey thanks for accepting my friend request cleckley, I just was looking through your flick chart and you've seen a lot more movies than me and your top movies are a lot different to mine. My favourite current director is p.t. Anderson, I was wondering, considering your wealth of movie knowledge what your opinion is of p.t. Anderson. My favourite film of all time being there will be blood, so I was wondering what you think?
And also I see that matrix is in your top ten. I have it on foxtel at the moment but I'm reluctant to watch it because the whole movie looks a little corny now. Tell me, is it as good as it was when it came out or has it aged badly?

I don't know about you, but the Ennio Morricone score grabs my attention straight away when it starts in The Untouchables. Then Connery and De Niro do the rest. It's just a awesome movie, good choice for your top ten list!
KingofPain on 1/14/2012 Reply · Like · (0 likes)
I think I want to go down that dark alley first, if only because I am drawn to darkness. I will try and track down all the movies you suggest. They are probably just as good as any other. Sadly, I won't live long enough to watch all the wonderful films India has gifted us with. You are providing me with a much appreciated service.
KingofPain on 1/26/2012 Reply · Like · (0 likes)
No, I think I'm currently in decent health. I eat the necessary amount of fiber most days, and I try to do my stretches on a regular basis. I guess I could do more cardio, but I'm in my healthy weight range. I just have to watch out for falling space debris and I should be fine. I'm just not sure what my psychological health will be like after watching all these movies you recommend. Your warnings do concern me somewhat.

Hey what was the name of that Chan book again? The one that has the bit about him meeting Yuen Biao. I'm thinking about giving it a read.
Many thanks, kind sir.

You seem to have seen a lot of obscure action flicks.
Alienss on Feb 24 Reply · Like · (0 likes)
I guess it's accurate, joining flickchart made me realize how many movies considered great I haven't seen. Going to have to start watching more. I'm guessing most of the movies would fall after watching some of the top ranked ones on flickchart.

I really appreciated your take on Fievel Goes West v. I Spit On Your Grave. I will concede that really I Spit On Your Grave was pretty vanilla for its genre, outside of the importance that people have mostly assigned it after the fact. I think it was more shocking to me because it was one of the first schlock movies I had ever really seen and as it was a chaser to a viewing of Bob Clark's coma-inducing Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things, it probably seemed much more dynamic. I also appreciated the 6-year-old home sick take on Fievel.

Hey, how'd you see Pedicab Driver? Bootleg?
I was looking at the Recently Added list, saw Pedicab Driver, clicked on it, and saw your name. I've wanted to see it since high school, but haven't because I refuse to watch it until there's an official DVD. Yeah, I'll probably have to wait until I'm in my 30's, if I'm lucky. But I'm a patient man.
ToryK on Mar 7 Reply · Like · (0 likes)
It all depends. I don't buy them because I'm not down with having "phony" stuff on my shelf, plus for the reason you've already mentioned. But if it's completely unavailable, like with Pedicab Driver, I'm totally cool with other people buying them. What else can you do? If it's a movie you can pick up on Amazon or 5 minutes away from your house at a store, then I'm against it.
shane24 on Mar 23 Reply · Like · (0 likes)
Do you have a number one movie you are looking forward to this year?
Can't wait to see The Raid, TDKR and The Avengers. But there is also Prometheus, Looper, Gangster Squad, Headhunters and Cogan's Trade that have me interested. At this moment, Django Unchained comes out next year for me, interested in that movie too.
Oh, also hope Lockout (or MS One: Maximum Security) is fun action sci-fi. Written by Luc Besson and starring Guy Pearce in his second sci-fi movie in a year along with Prometheus

It's a little late but I wanted to say thanks for accepting my friend request on FC. I see you've got some good films on your list. Though I am not a huge fan of your top 10 I still think you have good taste and after all it's your opinion. I read one of your previous comments about how at a younger age you watched art and then changed the categories of films you watched as you got older. I am only 12 but all I really watch are art house films. My flickchart isn't really updated but number one is correct. You should definatley see The Tree of Life. you may not like it but you should appreciate it. Anyway heres my top 5.5. The Seventh Seal4. Wild Strawberries3. Make Way For Tomorrow2. 2001: A Space Odyssey1. The Tree of Life# 1 and 2 are basically interchangeable but right now I'd pick The Tree of Life. Anyway message back lve to swap film ideas! BTW Love your profile pic!
jeremyd99 on Apr 4 Reply · Like · (0 likes)
I wouldn't say I dislike any films on your top 10 but there just not my favorite. I love The Godfather but I wanted to say that The Matrix used to be my favorite film but after multiple viewings im not a huge fan but it definatley is entertaining. Im also about to watch Office Space which looks pretty funny. About my flickchart I just haven't updated in a few months I've seen hundreds of films. I love them all but only the top 10 or so are in order (and as I said I would put 2001 over MWFT and The Tree of Life and 2001 are basically interchangable). My mind changes about movies all the time. Your list is not bad at all I like alot of the films I just would put them in a different order. I also see ur an Alfred Hitchcock fan who is a great director. I see why you don't like Terrence Malick's movies they are very slow but I find them hugley entertaining but very understandable that you disagree. Also I just watched Pan's Labyrinth for a second time and am possibly moving it to my top 10. Message me back I also have a youtube account and was wondering if you did anyway here's the link. http://www.youtube.com/user/jdiemert999?feature=mhee

I can see why you didn't like it,it is very bizzare also my list indicates my favorite movies or the ones I find most enjoyable. Suprisingly I found The Tree of Life and 2001 along with the rest of the films on my list hugely entertaining and fun. It's all a matter of opinion what was your favorite movie of the last year just out of curiosity?
jeremyd99 on Apr 6 Reply · Like · (0 likes)
Sorry haven't seen either one of those movies but I found Pan's Labyrinth very meaningful and beautiful I didn't see to much to come out in 2011 but I liked The Tree of Life Midnight in Paris Hugo The Artist and The Descendants we're all good I found a very overated movie to be The Help.
jeremyd99 on Apr 7 Reply · Like · (0 likes)
Yeah, for me The Academy Awards are bullshit they rarely ever make good choices they are terrible and also since A Girl Walks into A Bar a free movie on Youtube?
Ehh... I'll check them out anyway are you a There Will Be Blood fan?
Dat good u like 2001?
nolanfilmfan on Apr 9 Reply · Like · (0 likes)
I'd say my top ten is pretty much accurate. They switch places from time to time, but yeah, I intentionally put The Two Towers ahead of the other LOTR films. I would actually say that TTT and ROTK are pretty much tied though. The main reason TTT slightly beats the others for me is probably do to the battle of helms deep, which I think is the best battle sequence in LOTR. I really consider the series one film though, so it's hard to judge which is better...
ToryK on Apr 17 Reply · Like · (0 likes)
Dude, see The Raid now. I don't care if you're at work. I don't care if you're in a class. I don't care if you're knee-deep in poontang. You owe it to yourself to see it.
Re: It being No. 18 on my list - I'm in the middle of re-working my Top 50. I've been ranking away, so some things are probably in the wrong place. I'd put it ahead of Fistful, Tom Yum Goong, and probably even Project A. Not sure about The Godfather or the Terminators. But it is absolutely a must-see. I don't want to over-hype it, but the speed and the brutality was ridiculous.
And I wouldn't figure you for a Shinoda fan? I'm kind of surprised.
Honestly, no clue what I thought you'd be into. I know you're into rap, but I figured you'd be strictly into guys like Nas and Jay-Z. Maybe The Streets. But if you're really into Shinoda's stuff, I'm sure you'll appreciate the score he's put together. Linkin Park was the first band I was really into, and I loved them dearly until I was...14, maybe? My tastes changed and shifted towards stuff like Bloc Party and Radiohead, and then later on, hip-hop and rap were added to the list. I still like Shinoda and I'll always dig their remix album, Reanimation. But I can't really listen to much of their other stuff anymore.
About me being awkward, I'm a pretty laid-back once you get to know me. But if people talk to me as if all they can think about is how awkward I can be, I'm even more awkward because it's all I can think about.
ToryK on Apr 18 Reply · Like · (0 likes)
I like Nas. I think the guy's made some great music. But I agree with you on him being deep. Absolute bullshit. It's good music, but deep? No. Em's excellent. Jay's excellent. Have you listened to any J. Cole or Jay Electronica? Good stuff.I'd give Punch-Drunk Love a shot if you're a PTA fan. It's awesome. I know you're not big on romance, and that would definitely be an issue. But you never know, it's worth a shot. Sandler's not really an issue, though. I actually think he's really good in it. I guess it would depend on if you're just not really a fan or if you genuinely despise him.As for Facebook, I really don't remember. I'm almost never on Facebook as I think it's pretty silly. But I think I might have. I'll have to check.

Wow, so The Avengers is at 83, huh? Now you've got ME jealous. Is it really that good?
Oh, I hear you. I expect it to be pretty high on my list, as well. I've dug everything Marvel's thrown out so far (even Iron Man 2, a movie I think gets unfairly shat on), so I doubt I'll come out of it disappointed. Love the leads (I appreciate Hemsworth even more, now that I've seen Cabin), love Whedon, so it should be an awesome time.Does the dialogue deliver? With Downey performing stuff that was Whedon-written , I'm expecting good, nay, GREAT things.
