WATCH: First Trailer for ‘Elysium’
It’s been four years since District 9 took the world of cinema by storm, but if this first trailer is any indication, Neill Blomkamp‘s follow-up, Elysium, has been totally worth the wait. Starring Matt Damon and Jodie Foster on opposite sides of the societal spectrum, the story – set in the year 2154 – once again plays with socio-political themes.
On the man-made space station Elysium, the wealthy thrive, while the poor languish on a ruined, over-populated Earth. Foster plays the state head hell-bent on keeping the two halves of society separate, while Damon’s character is determined to break the barriers down. And judging by the trailer, Elysium looks to be a true feast for sci-fi fans.

Produced by Peter Jackson, director Blomkamp’s District 9 was a revelatory debut. Expanding on Blomkamp’s short film, Alive in Joburg, it not only ended up on many critics’ year-end best-of lists for 2009 and scored big at the box office; it also garnered four Oscar nominations, including Best Picture. It is currently ranked #8 of 2009 films on Flickchart, in a big year for sci-fi. (D9 is ranked behind Star Trek and Moon, but ahead of Avatar and Watchmen.)
Elysium reunites Blomkamp with his D9 star, Sharlto Copley, and also co-stars Diego Luna, Alice Braga and William Fichtner.
Elysium opens August 9.
