Universal’s The Wolfman was a disappointment in 2010. (It’s ranked #96 for the year on Flickchart.) Production woes and re-shoots resulted in Universal spending more money on it than they’d intended, so it might be surprising to learn that the company intends to reboot the franchise.
Again.
Reportedly, the new film (tentatively titled “Werewolf“) is intended to have much more in common with the 1941 original, The Wolf Man, than the 2010 film does. Werewolves haven’t been a big draw at the box office as of late (unless you count the Twilight franchise, which is really more about the vampires, isn’t it?), but Universal is apparently shopping for directors and hoping to begin shooting as early as this fall.

As much as I have come to loath the endless parade of reboots (is there really some reason they couldn’t just make another damn movie and take it for granted that we get the idea that this guy turns into a werewolf and go from there?), I love the old Universal Monsters movies and I’m happy to see an effort made to tap into that legacy.
I’m under no illusions about the quality of those old films, either. There are really only about five in the entire lot that are actually good to great (Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, The Wolf Man, the Spanish version of Dracula and the oft-overlooked Dracula’s Daughter). The rest are generally just campy horror cheese, but I adore them.
Having said all this, I still haven’t seen last year’s Wolf Man. It came out at a time of year I just wasn’t able to get out to the theater and then I kinda forgot about it.

I haven’t seen it either, Travis. Though I’ve kind of wanted too. Of course, I’ve never seen all those old monster movies. I wouldn’t know anything about the original Wolf Man.

Haven’t seen Wolf Man either, but I’ve seen the original. Not entirely sure how they think they’ll make bank off of this if the more recent remake didn’t do all that great.
