VFX Studio Rhythm & Hues Files for Bankruptcy

Prominent visual effects studio Rhythm & Hues won the BAFTA Award for Best Visual Effects for its work on Ang Lee‘s Life of Pi on Sunday, and on Monday, the studio filed for Chapter 11 protection.

Just last week, Rhythm & Hues was given an infusion of $20 million by three major studios – Universal, Twentieth Century Fox and Warner Bros. – to keep it afloat through April. At that time, R&H was expected to be sold to an Indian effects company, Prime Focus, but that deal fell through, and now the studio has publicly announced it has been forced to reorganize. Buyers are still circling the troubled studio, but for now, it has become the latest victim in the increasingly tough visual effects industry.

Summary (from Fox): Before Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. Before they were archenemies, they were closest of friends, working together, with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to stop the greatest threat the world has ever known. In the process, a rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto’s Brotherhood and Professor X’s X-MEN.

Matthew Vaughn surprises (me at least) with a fun, if a little cheesy and convenient, summer superhero movie.

Pre-Rumbles: “Thor” vs. “Captain America: The First Avenger”

As Marvel Studios begins their big push to the 2012 release of The Avengers, their films are increasingly taking on more of a soap-opera-like continuity between them. This serialization might be a little aggravating, but so far, it’s not keeping the films from being enjoyable in their own right (at least for the most part).

Still, comic book superhero films in general (and Marvel films in particular) are only becoming more prevalent nowadays. This year, we’ll see the X-Men prequel, X-Men: First Class. And, only five years after the hit-and-miss (mostly miss) Spider-Man 3, the webslinger will be getting his very own shiny reboot in 2012.

But in The Avengers is Marvel’s juggernaut, and before it brings together Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk, it has to introduce more members of its roster in their very own films. It can be a little exhausting trying to keep up with these Avengers, so if we really only want to check out one Marvel movie this summer, which should it be? With that question in mind, Flickchart‘s Reel Rumbles take on a slightly different form as we present: Pre-Rumbles: Thor vs. Captain America: The First Avenger.
