What to Watch this Weekend: The Croods vs. Olympus Has Fallen

It can be tough deciding what movie to watch. That’s where I come in. To help lead you through the cinematic landscape to hopefully avoid the duds and misfires that can soil ones love for the theater going experience. In this series, I will take the trailers for what I assume will be the top 2 highest-grossing new releases, dissect their trailers, and then summarize who I think should see which movie. I’m not here to say which one will be better. I’m here to help you decide which will be better for you.

Jeff Bridges and Ryan Reynolds to Star in ‘R.I.P.D.’

Director Robert Schwentke is bringing the Dark Horse Comics series R.I.P.D. to the big screen, starring Rooster Cogburn and Hal Jordan.

R.I.P.D. concerns a group of deceased lawmen in the “Rest In Peace Department” who enforce order amongst other dead people. Jeff Bridges will be playing Roy Powell, a long-dead gunslinger from the Old West. Ryan Reynolds will play his partner, Nick Cruz, a recently murdered cop out for revenge.

The role of Powell was originally set to be played by Zack Galifianakis, who dropped out due to scheduling conflicts. Bridges is quite the choice to replace him.

Universal Pictures has just announced that R.I.P.D. will be released on June 28, 2013.

The Under-Ranked: Green Lantern

Believe it or not, this summer has already brought us three movies based on comics or graphic novels. Some have done quite well for their franchises (Thor, X-Men: First Class) while others haven’t been so lucky (Priest). This weekend brings about the fourth of these films, Green Lantern, which is DC Comics first summer film since last year’s train wreck Jonah Hex. With new films in the Superman and Batman franchises on the way, Green Lantern is DC’s best bet for a hit until those other superhero monstrosities are released. But before you check out the newest superhero film of this summer, check out some of these under ranked films from the stars of Green Lantern.

Green Lantern: A Flickcharter’s Movie Review

Being in the Green Lantern Corps. is a lot like being a U.S. Marshal. You are allocated a certain degree of autonomy and discretion. Hal Jordan (Ryan Reynolds), however, does not have any of these advantages. A local who happened upon an alien with a dying wish, he finds himself introduced to a world vastly different from his own. As he is the first human Green Lantern, he has to be mentored by a seven foot tall bird named Tomar-Re (Geoffrey Rush is on a roll isn’t he?), he can’t figure out his ring’s oath, and his trainer, Sinestro (Mark Strong) is an ass.

The Under-Ranked: Paul

This weekend, one of Britain’s greatest comedy duos come together once again for Paul, about two comic book loving nerds who happen upon an alien that they befriend. Paul brings Simon Pegg and Nick Frost back together again after Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, to both costar and write. Paul features a cavalcade of some of today’s best comedic actors. But before you see Paul this weekend, you might want to check out some of their under-ranked films.
