X-Men: First Class – A Flickcharter’s Review

Summary (from Fox): Before Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. Before they were archenemies, they were closest of friends, working together, with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to stop the greatest threat the world has ever known. In the process, a rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto’s Brotherhood and Professor X’s X-MEN.
Matthew Vaughn surprises (me at least) with a fun, if a little cheesy and convenient, summer superhero movie.

kingofpain – “Both movies involve an hero dragging around a chick while killing lots of villains. However, the chick in American Ninja was severely annoying and I’m not a big fan of Michael Dudikoff as an action star. Tom Cruise is a madman in real life, but at least he’s kind of likable as an actor. And even Cameron Diaz is preferable to the girl in American Ninja. I guess that part toward the end when the evil ninja shot a laser at Dudikoff was kind of awesome, and… well, the whole final battle in American Ninja was pretty cool. But Knight and Day was a more tolerable experience overall. Not a whole lot more tolerable, but there were some decent action scenes and attempts at humor.”

The homepage of Flickchart states “If they’re all 5 star movies, which one is the best?” I put that to the test to determine just how effective their system is, and just how broken traditional rating methods are.
I keep a running diary of all the films I watch, complete with date, film, rating, and check marks indicating whether it’s the first time I’ve seen the movie and if I watched it on TCM. There are very few other things to do with the “Latino Images in Film” spiral notebooks I won from TCM a while back. I’m almost positive Cantinflas would have done the same thing. I watch a movie, record it in the diary an hour later after it has sunk in, and then get it on Flickchart when I get the chance. The current book is at over 500 movies since July ’09. Now, it would make sense that the relationship of the ratings I come up with after seeing a movie and their positions on Flickchart would match, right?
Well, no.
