Flickchart Preview: ‘Oblivion’ vs. ‘After Earth’

2013 is shaping up to be a pretty big year for science fiction, probably the biggest since 2009 brought us heavy-hitters like Avatar, District 9, Moon and Star Trek. Major sci-fi releases this year will include J.J. Abrams‘ sequel Star Trek Into Darkness, Zack Snyder‘s Superman reboot Man of Steel, Neill Blomkamp‘s D-9 followup Elysium, Iron Man 3, World War Z, Ender’s Game, and Guillermo del Toro‘s monsters-vs-robots extravaganza Pacific Rim, among many others.
Two of the sci-fi juggernauts vying for your theater bucks are Oblivion, starring Tom Cruise, and After Earth, featuring Will Smith. Both are big-budget future tales involving a major box office star returning to Earth after humanity was forced to abandon the planet, only to find something sinister at work. ‘Jurassic Park 4′ Set for 2014 Release

Universal Pictures has announced that they will release the fourth film in the Jurassic Park franchise on June 13, 2014, right in the middle of the busy summer box office season.
Steven Spielberg and Frank Marshall are returning to produce the film, though Spielberg – who helmed the groundbreaking Jurassic Park in 1993 and its first sequel, The Lost World: Jurassic Park in 1997 – will not be directing. No director or cast are currently attached, but the script will be handled by Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver (Rise of the Planet of the Apes).
Jurassic Park 4 has been an on-again, off-again project since Jurassic Park III was released, directed by Joe Johnston, in 2001. In a July 2012 interview, Marshall stated that the movie would still rely on animatronic dinosaurs, despite the advancements in visual effects technology in the intervening decade.
The Dueling Directors of Star Wars: Episode VII

Following last week’s announcement that the Walt Disney Company has purchased Lucasfilm for over 4 billion dollars and scheduled Star Wars Episode VII for release in 2015, the Internet has been in a flurry of speculation over the future of the saga. Far be it from us not to jump on the bandwagon.
Even more than questioning where the story is supposed to go in the future, everybody seems to be talking about who will direct the next episode of the franchise, given that George Lucas himself is reportedly leaving Star Wars behind (to serve merely as a consultant on Episode VII). Rather than offer any actual suggestions here, let’s take a look at some possible contenders in true Flickchart fashion: two at a time.

10 Cinematic Battles of The Films of 2011

2011 has drawn to a close, and instead of doing a typical year-end review of movies, I thought I would do one with a Flickchart twist. I will take pairs of movies that I have seen throughout the year, link them thematically together, and square them off against each other. So without any further ado, let the battles begin with a match-up between the two worst superhero movies of the year.
