For those interested in checking out M. Night Shyamalan and Will Smith‘s multi-million-dollar sci-fi epic After Earth, your wait just got a little shorter.
Sony is moving After Earth up to May 31 from its original release date of June 7. In the original slot, After Earth would have opened against the Vince Vaughn/Owen Wilson comedy The Internship, and been only a week ahead of the release of Warner Bros.’ Superman reboot, Man of Steel, and apocalyptic comedy This Is the End.
Now, the sci-fi film – about a father and son who crash-land on an inhospitable Earth 1000 years after mankind abandoned the planet – will open against two thrillers, Lionsgate’s Now You See Me and Universal’s The Purge. It will also be coming out only a week after the crowded May 24, when The Hangover Part III, Fast & Furious 7 and Epic all debut.
Putting a little space between After Earth and Man of Steel may just work in the former film’s favor, as Superman would be sure to erode Will Smith’s box office take. You can check out our preview of After Earth - which we prematurely pit against Oblivion, opening today – here.

2013 is shaping up to be a pretty big year for science fiction, probably the biggest since 2009 brought us heavy-hitters like Avatar, District 9, Moon and Star Trek. Major sci-fi releases this year will include J.J. Abrams‘ sequel Star Trek Into Darkness, Zack Snyder‘s Superman reboot Man of Steel, Neill Blomkamp‘s D-9 followup Elysium, Iron Man 3, World War Z, Ender’s Game, and Guillermo del Toro‘s monsters-vs-robots extravaganza Pacific Rim, among many others.
Two of the sci-fi juggernauts vying for your theater bucks are Oblivion, starring Tom Cruise, and After Earth, featuring Will Smith. Both are big-budget future tales involving a major box office star returning to Earth after humanity was forced to abandon the planet, only to find something sinister at work. Which of these movies looks to be more worth our time? Let’s size them up – Flickchart-style, head-to-head – and find out.

You might be thinking: “Why in the world would this be considered a Poster of Prominence?”

This might be the best week of new movie releases since I began writing this weekly post over five months ago. There are at least 5 movies here that I consider must-sees.
Critics are making this out to be another gem of a movie from director Ben Affleck. In my opinion, the world is a better place when Ben’s around.

This movie has so much going against it (not screened for critics and Shyamalan to name but a couple) but I’ll be damned if this isn’t the flick I’m most looking forward to this month. The trailer is a ton of fun and at 80 minutes with credits, it should at least go by fast.

I initially dismissed this modern retelling of The Scarlet Letter as some silly teen junk but it’s been getting very solid reviews. Plus, Emma Stone is super cute.
