Tom Cruise is attached to star in Yukikaze, an adaptation of a series of Japanese sci-fi novels by author Chohei Kamayashi. The plot centers around a planetary defense force fighting back against an alien invasion, using a wormhole over Antarctica to set up bases on the aliens’ planet. The novels have previously been adapted into a series of direct-to-video anime movies. Produced by Warner Bros., the movie will continue a bit of a sci-fi streak for Cruise: Currently starring in Oblivion, his next project is director Doug Liman‘s alien war movie All You Need Is Kill, currently slated for a March 4, 2014 release. This week, director Zack Snyder releases his fifth film, Sucker Punch. This film marks Snyder’s first wholly original work, after 2004’s Dawn of the Dead and his adaptations of the famous graphic novels 300 and Watchmen and the children’s book, Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole. In Sucker Punch, Baby Doll, played by Emily Browning is left in a mental institution where she will receive a lobotomy in five days. Along with four other inmates, Baby Doll uses her imagination to create worlds that will help her and her other captives escape. But before going to see Sucker Punch this weekend, check out some of these under-ranked films from the film’s stars.

Along with Browning’s Baby Doll, Vanessa Hudgens as Blondie, and Jamie Chung’s Amber are Jena Malone and Abbie Cornish as Rocket and Sweet Pea, respectively. Both actresses have done some great independent features that are worthwhile to check out.

What do your fellow Flickcharters have to say?

ToryK – “I loved these guys growing up. Still do. But I think Tarantino’s most recent movie beats Rodriguez’, no contest. Machete was nuts, true. But to me, it was nowhere near as fun as Desperado. Or even Once Upon a Time in Mexico. Basterds felt like Tarantino taking his own movies apart, finding out what makes them tick, and building a new film with that knowledge in mind. I didn’t dislike Machete, I was just disappointed. I wanted more from a guy I was used to having to having so much fun with.”

I reviewed this movie when it first came out for the site. I originally placed it in my top 33% but it’s fallen to around top 37% since. I expect it to keep dropping a bit as nothing has really stuck with me about the movie five months later.

Official Synopsis from Universal Studios: “In late 2007, filmmakers Ariel Schulman and Henry Joost sensed a story unfolding as they began to film the life of Ariel’s brother, Nev. They had no idea that their project would lead to the most exhilarating and unsettling months of their lives. A reality thriller that is a shocking product of our times, Catfish is a riveting story of love, deception and grace within a labyrinth of online intrigue.”

Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoolewatch the trailer

Legend of the Guardians movie reviews and rankings

Animated owl movie directed by Zack Snyder and starring Jim Sturgess and Hugo Weaving. I think it looks like it’s at least worth a watch on the eventual Blu-ray.
