I have to admit that I’m fairly unversed in the films of Faye Dunaway. There’s not really any agenda to speak of; I just haven’t gotten around to seeing much of her filmography. At this year’s TCM Classic Film FEST 2012 I was able to rectify that, seeing both The Thomas Crown Affair and Chinatown. The films aren’t exactly related – one being a caper and the other a post-noir – but the actress turns in some very interesting performances in each. I figured it would make for an interesting post to try to take a look at her performances in each of these films and suss out which one was the better. Should be easy, right?
Following the success of Batman Begins, anticipation was running high – to say the least – for the sequel. Begins and Memento had made me a big Christopher Nolan fan, but even I was among the skeptical when it was announced that Heath Ledger would be playing the Joker in The Dark Knight.
Warner Brothers just announced that Tom Hardy and Anne Hathaway have joined the cast of The Dark Knight Rises. Hardy will be playing the main villain Bane, while Hathaway will be playing the fan-favorite Catwoman. Christopher Nolan, who saved the Batman franchise with his vision and direction, says this will be his last Batman film.
I have always been a huge Batman fan. The first movie I remember seeing in theaters was Batman. I remember my jaw dropping as I watched the unlikely Michael Keaton morph into my favorite comic book hero. I’ll never forget how frightening Jack Nicholson could be every time the Joker came on-screen.
One of my favorite debates is, “Which Batman movie is the best?” You can make cases for all of them, save Batman and Robin. What’s that you say? You can’t make a case for Batman Forever being awesome? Well, challenge me all you want and tell me I’m nuts, but Batman Forever is totally a guilty pleasure for me.
Broadcast News just received the Criterion Collection Blu-ray treatment, and was accordingly re-released on DVD last week. The film follows three television news journalists played by Holly Hunter, William Hurt, and Albert Brooks. Hunter is a hot shot journalist who likes focusing on her career, but looks for sexual confirmation when it comes to being a woman. Hurt plays as her serpent, appreciating her womanly allure, but willing to destroy her ethical standards. Brooks, who is also in love with Hunter, can see past Hurt’s charm and knows what he truly represents, the biased pandering of news media.
