Michael Clarke Duncan passed away at the age of 54, leaving behind a solid body of work in film. With his rich, booming voice and towering physique, Duncan was a commanding presence any time he was on screen. One of his first film roles was in Armageddon, where he struck up a friendship with Bruce Willis. That, in turn, led him to be cast in his most recognized performance as John Coffey in Frank Darabont’s adaptation of Stephen King’s novella, The Green Mile. Duncan’s performance was tender, endearing and moving; audiences easily sympathized with the doomed character and the Academy of Motion Picture Sciences recognized him with a nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his work.

With the Oscars recently wrapped up, it’s time to take a look at a movie that dominated the Academy Awards like few have before and few will again. This film was not only nominated for a record 14 Oscars (a feat that’s only been tied by the juggernaut that was Titanic). Under the guise of the New York stage, All About Eve – known by some as “the bitchiest movie ever made” – puts the backstage politics of show business on screen like no film had before.

As the Oscar telecast creeps up on us again, it begs the question: How many times has the Academy really gotten this “Best Picture” thing right, anyway?

Think about it. How many controversial decisions are there in the Academy’s history? How many times is a movie other than Best Picture long remembered as the best of the year?

This cop movie has a very good cast: Wesley Snipes (!), Don Cheadle, Richard Gere, Ethan Hawke.  Definitely looks like it’s worth the time it takes to watch.
