Following the modest success of The Expendables 2, it was announced that Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger would team up again, this time for a prison movie entitled The Tomb.
In the wake of the weak box office returns of their separate action outings earlier this year - Bullet to the Head and The Last Stand – it has now been announced that The Tomb is actually moving up its release date and gaining a new title. Directed by Mikael Håfström (1408), the film is now entitled Escape Plan, which is a little more descriptive of the plot. The original title referred to the high-tech prison designed by Stallone’s character, in which he finds himself incarcerated for a crime he didn’t commit. He meets up with Schwarzenegger behind bars, and the pair attempt to devise a way to escape the inescapable prison.
So, it’s the “thinking man’s” Stallone/Schwarzenegger movie.
Originally scheduled for the end of September, Escape Plan is has now – armed with its new title – been moved up to September 13…which puts it in direct box office combat with sequels Machete Kills and Insidious: Chapter 2.
Something tells me Machete‘s title may prove to be a bit more prophetic.
Escape Plan also stars Jim Caviezel, 50 Cent, Sam Neill and Vinnie Jones.

Though the tough guys felt the box office blues earlier this year, Schwarzenegger’s The Last Stand at least sat well with critics. You can check out Flickchart’s favorable review here.

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is gearing up to be a big part of their “Phase Two” plans that begin this summer with Iron Man 3. And they’ve just found their female lead in the form of a lady who already knows her way around outer space. Zoe Saldana – who will reprise her roles as Uhura in Star Trek Into Darkness and Neytiri in James Cameron‘s two sequels to Avatar - is in talks to star as Gamora, a green-skinned humanoid alien, in Guardians. The film also stars Chris Pratt as Star-Lord and Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer. Directed by James Gunn, Guardians of the Galaxy is currently slated for an August 1, 2014 release date. Earlier this month, writers Laeta Kalogridis and Patrick Lussier were hired by Skydance Productions and Annapurna Pictures to pen the script for the next installment of the Terminator franchise. And though it has not been officially confirmed, former California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has revealed that he will return to the franchise that spawned his most famous role.
The news came during a London press conference for Schwarzenegger’s new film, The Last Stand, which is currently in theaters. Schwarzenegger stated Terminator is on his slate of upcoming movies along with Triplets - a followup to his 1988 comedy with Danny DeVito, Twins - and a new Conan movie.
The previous film in the franchise, Terminator Salvation, focused on an adult John Connor portrayed by Christian Bale battling against the machines that had nearly wiped out humanity in the wake of Judgment Day. Schwarzenegger’s participation in that film was limited to having his face rotoscoped onto a different body builder’s frame. What his role will entail in the next film is uncertain. Termination Salvation was co-written by John Brancato and Michael Ferris, who also penned the screenplay for Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines. Both performed below expectations at the box office, and neither film was as well-received as the original The Terminator or Terminator 2: Judgment Day, both of which were co-written and directed by James Cameron.
What direction the story is taking for the fifth film is not yet known. Kalogridis co-wrote Martin Scorsese‘s Shutter Island and was a co-producer on Avatar for Cameron. Lussier co-wrote and directed Drive Angry and My Bloody Valentine.
The Last Stand, Schwarzenegger’s first starring role in 10 years, is currently in theaters. Well-received critically, it is nonetheless underperforming at the box office. You can check out Flickchart’s review of the film here.
