Survey Says: Denzel Washington is America’s Favorite Movie Star
According to a new Harris Poll, Denzel Washington is America’s top movie star, a distinction he’s held four times in the past. This year, an online survey conducted among 2,255 U.S. adults saw Washington claim the spot from last year’s favorite, Tom Hanks, who fell to the #5 spot.
Surprisingly, Washington claimed his position despite starring in only one movie in 2014: Antoine Fuqua‘s action thriller, The Equalizer. The film is currently ranked #49 among 2014 releases on Flickchart, and wins 52% of its matchups on the site.
The top ten stars on Harris’ poll are as follows:
- Denzel Washington
- John Wayne
- Brad Pitt
- Johnny Depp
- Tom Hanks
- Clint Eastwood
- Jennifer Lawrence and Meryl Streep (tie)
- Harrison Ford
- Angelina Jolie
Apparently, the miserable performance of Transcendence didn’t hurt Johnny Depp’s popularity too much. Doubtless his turn as the Big Bad Wolf in the Oscar-nominated Into the Woods helped. (You can read Flickchart’s take on Into the Woods as a stage-to-screen adaptation here.) Depp previously held the top spot on Harris’s poll in 2010 and 2011, when his popularity was riding high on Alice in Wonderland and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.
It’s not too surprising that Tom Hanks would fall from the #1 spot last year (after his Oscar-nominated turn in Captain Phillips), as he had no major acting credits to his name in 2014. He’ll return in December 2015 in the drama Ithaca, the feature directorial debut of his Sleepless in Seattle co-star, Meg Ryan.
Clint Eastwood has often been a strong presence on Harris’s list, and 2014 is no exception, despite the fact that his only appearances were behind the camera, directing Jersey Boys and recent Best Picture Oscar nominee American Sniper.
Unsurprisingly, Hunger Games star Jennifer Lawrence scored tops on the poll among Millennials. She shared a tie at the #7 spot with the great Meryl Streep, who just received her unprecendented 19th Oscar nomination for Into the Woods.
Harrison Ford undoubtedly owes his presence on the list due to the buzz around Star Wars: The Force Awakens opening December 2015 more than his appearance last year in The Expendables 3. And Angeline Jolie made big box office for Disney this year with her title role in Malificent (currently ranked just ahead of Washington’s The Equalizer at #48 for 2014 on Flickchart).
Denzel Washington was previously the #1 favorite on the Harris Poll for a three-year stretch from 2006
to 2008, and also in 2012 after his Oscar-nominated turn in Flight. You can check out all of Washington’s top-ranked films on Flickchart here.
