Sean Bean to Play “Han Solo-Type” Character in Wachowskis’ “Jupiter Ascending”
The Matrix directors Andy and Lana Wachowski have added some gravitas to their next sci-fi project by casting Sean Bean. Known for adding a touch of class to genre roles in projects like The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring and HBO’s Game of Thrones, Bean could be a great choice for the role of Stinger, who is being described as “a Han Solo-type” character, in the Wachowskis’ upcoming Jupiter Ascending.
Jupiter Ascending is still a pretty secretive project, but details of the plot that have been made available have made it sound a bit like Snow White in Space: In a universe where human beings are the lowest form of life of the evolutionary totem pole, an extraterrestrial queen is nonetheless threatened by a lowly Russian maid (played by Mila Kunis). So she hires a bounty hunter (Channing Tatum) from a superior race to hunt down and destroy the girl. Of course, upon meeting her, he falls for her, and decides to do whatever he can to save her. The film will also star Eddie Redmayne (Les Miserables).
The last directorial effort from the Wachowskis was 2012‘s Cloud Atlas, which was wildly divisive among critics and disappointing at the box office. It did, however, earn a Best Picture nomination at our 2nd Annual Flickcharter’s Choice Awards. If you haven’t yet, take a look at the nominees and vote for your favorites.
One more note on Sean Bean’s casting: Let’s not forget the man’s penchant for epic death scenes. Will he be able to sink his teeth into yet another such meaty scene in Jupiter Ascending? Time will tell. In the meantime, you can revisit some epic Death of Bean below. (Umm, spoilers?)
