New Video Releases For The Week Of April 6th, 2010
It can be sometimes be hard to keep track of adding everything that you’ve seen to Flickchart, and movies have a tendency to leave your mind for one reason or another.
To combat this, we’re starting a new weekly feature including all the notable DVD, Blu-ray, Netflix Instant Watch, and Warner Brothers Archive titles that are newly available. Each film will include their Flickchart global statistics, as well as three direct links to rank the title against similar movies (one good, one average and one bad) to help nail down where the movie belongs on your chart. Without further adieu, let’s get started!
New on DVD & Blu-ray
The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans – (DVD & Blu-ray)
This is a quasi-remake of a solid character study movie from the early 90’s called “Bad Lieutenant“. This one tanked a bit at the box office, but had very strong reviews. I am a sucker for unhinged Nic Cage, so I will be picking this one up Tuesday.

The Lord of the Rings (1978) – (DVD & Blu-ray)
I have a soft spot for this movie, and some days I prefer to watch it over the Peter Jackson version due to the fact that the story is shorter and tighter. The animation is interesting, and I really can’t wait to see how it looks on Blu-ray.

The Lord of the Rings Trilogy (Blu-ray)
Fantasic movies, but beware: these are just the theatrical cuts, so the studio wants you to double-buy Blu-ray’s just as you double-bought DVD’s. Save your money ($63 on Amazon) for the Extended Editions. Early reviews have been saying the picture quality is on the disappointing side, so hopefully that will be fixed by the time they release the extended cuts.

Icons of Suspense: Hammer Films (DVD)
Hammer rocked – pure and simple. The movies included in this set are: THESE ARE THE DAMNED, CASH ON DEMAND, THE SNORKEL, STOP ME BEFORE I KILL!, MANIAC, and NEVER TAKE CANDY FROM A STRANGER are all fun (not “Never take Candy…” that’s about molestation) genre classics.
New On The Warner Brothers Archive
WB introduced this service about a year ago, and they seem to be succeeding with the model. They make films that probably won’t turn a profit with big DVD campaigns available exclusively as made-on-demand burned DVD-R’s – sold online via their website. Don’t be fooled into thinking these aren’t quality films though. Most are just too old, too racist, or too obscure to warrant the time and money needed to fully restore and release the movies. New releases come every 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month. There are two notables this month:
STEEL (1997) – Shaq as a superhero wearing a steel coat of armor. Oh, and Judd Nelson. Do you really need to know any more? Grab a pint of ice cream and lose yourself in how ridiculous it is. Here’s the trailer:
The Amazing Captain Nemo – Burgess Meredith as a mad scientist hell-bent on destroying the world unless he gets a billion dollars in gold. Again, do you really need to know anything else?

Thanks, Daniel! I was especially interested to see what’s coming to Netflix Instant Watch. There were several I’ve never seen but would like to (Looking for Mr. Goodbar, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, Heaven Can Wait, Reds), plus a couple I love and am happy to see more readily available (Harold and Maude, Love Story).
What a neat idea for a regular feature.
Well done.
