Movies To See Before You Die: Kazaam
A stunning piece of work and one of the most important films ever made. Kazaam is complex, unforgettable and cunningly original, a rare movie that has fun while touching at the very core of humanity. The first time seeing the rich story of Kazaam unfold in front of my eyes changed my life forever.
Directed by Paul M. Glaser and starring Shaquille O’Neal, Kazaam – a 5,000-year-old genie – is summoned from a magical boombox by a young boy named Max and offers him three wishes. Max then takes Kazaam along for an adventure through the city as he searches for his father.
From the first frame to the last, you will be swept into the fabulous world of Kazaam. With its front as a comedic fantasy, it’s filled with humor and visually astounding sequences but more than anything Kazaam is a beautiful story of family and friendship. Christian Ford & Roger Soffer gives us an elaborate and intelligent screenplay that elevates viewers to deeper insight of the world around them. Paul M. Glaser is beyond amazing and makes the transition from actor to director look easy. Many may remember Glaser as the original Starsky from the 1970’s hit TV show “Starsky and Hutch”. His ability to focus and capture the intimate depths of each scene will leave you in awe. Another exceptionally meaningful film from Glaser you should not miss is The Air up There.
Shaquille O’Neal could be one of the most under-appreciated actors of all time. He makes this far-fetched story feel real with the heartwarming portrayal of Kazaam, his snub for best actor at the 1997 Academy Awards was very sad.
Nominees from that year such as Geoffrey Rush in Shine and Billy Bob Thorton in Sling Blade look like high school drama students in comparison. Shaq’s fantastic unmatched talent can also be seen in the 1997 flick Steel, one of the greatest action films of all time.
The soundtrack for Kazaam features some of the best original songs of the 1990’s. “I Am Kazaam”, “We Genie” and “Mr. Material” – all sung by Shaquille O’Neal – are profound poetry. Lyrics so perfect and intense you’ll be wondering why they have been missing from your daily playlist.
If you have not seen Kazaam then your life is not complete, you should make this the next film you see. It is best to gather your friends and family together to enjoy this beauty, it will make your family and friendship bonds stronger having shared this together.

I remember being amused when I saw this as a kid, and haven’t seen it since… Don’t care to watch it. I’m sure it’s crap
