The Under-Ranked: ‘Oz: The Great and Powerful’

Next year will see the 75th anniversary of one of the all-time great films, The Wizard of Oz. Few films have had the impact or importance. When Dorothy opened up her Kansas farmhouse door to the world of Oz, she might have well have opened up the world of cinema to color films in a big way. The Wizard of Oz also told a fantasy story, even a children’s story, in a darker and much more intricate way than almost any film prior.
There have been several follow-ups or spin-offs to L. Frank Baum’s world, most notably Sidney Lumet’s musical The Wiz and the incredibly dark unofficial sequel, Disney’s Return to Oz. No film yet has had quite the spectacle, cast, or pedigree behind a Wizard of Oz follow-up as Oz: The Great and Powerful has. Not only is Disney basically banking on this being their next Alice in Wonderland, but the film is by Evil Dead and Spider-Man franchise director Sam Raimi, and features a huge cast that includes Mila Kunis, Zach Braff, and former Oscar nominees James Franco, Michelle Williams and former winner Rachel Weisz.
After a rough few years for Disney, with both animation projects and live-action films not going as planned, Disney has quite a lot riding on Oz: The Great and Powerful, their first live-action film since John Carter bombed. Before checking out Disney’s latest attempt at live-action greatness, and the prequel to one of cinema’s most famous stories, maybe check out some of these under-ranked films from the stars of Oz: The Great and Powerful.

The Under-Ranked: Gangster Squad

It’s been an interesting road for Gangster Squad getting to theaters. Shot and finished in 2011, the film was scheduled for release in September 2012. However after the Aurora shooting last year, Gangster Squad was pushed to early 2013 in order to edit a scene in which a shooting occurred in a movie theater. Now Gangster Squad is finally coming out as one of the first big releases of the new year. Gangster Squad is the first drama from director Ruben Fleischer, who previously helmed the comedies Zombieland and 30 Minutes or Less. Before you go see Fleischer experiment in new genres this weekend, check out some of these under-ranked films from the stars of Gangster Squad.
The Under-Ranked: Green Lantern

Believe it or not, this summer has already brought us three movies based on comics or graphic novels. Some have done quite well for their franchises (Thor, X-Men: First Class) while others haven’t been so lucky (Priest). This weekend brings about the fourth of these films, Green Lantern, which is DC Comics first summer film since last year’s train wreck Jonah Hex. With new films in the Superman and Batman franchises on the way, Green Lantern is DC’s best bet for a hit until those other superhero monstrosities are released. But before you check out the newest superhero film of this summer, check out some of these under ranked films from the stars of Green Lantern.

The Under-Ranked: X-Men: First Class

This weekend, the first of many upcoming superhero reboots will be released. Leading the pack before the rumored Fantastic Four restart and next summer’s The Amazing Spider-Man is X-Men: First Class, director Matthew Vaughn’s tale of the beginning of Professor Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters in the 60s and the friendship between Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr, who will become Magneto. Vaughn has cast this new film in the X-Men franchise with some of the most talented actors of today. So before seeing his newest film, check out some of the under-ranked films from the stars of X-Men: First Class.

The Under-Ranked: The Hangover Part II

It’s hard to believe that it has been two years since The Hangover was released. Todd Phillips’ comedy, starring three relatively unknown actor-comedians, rushed up the box office charts to become the most highest-grossing R rated comedy of all time – beating out Beverly Hills Cop, the previous title-holder for twenty-five years.
Now, the films’ three stars have become some of Hollywood’s greatest talents and will reunite with Phillips with The Hangover Part II, being released this weekend. But before checking out their newest drunken adventure, now in Bangkok, check out some of these under-ranked films from the stars of The Hangover Part II.
