Posters of Prominence

Warner Bros. has released the first tease for director Alfonso Cuarón‘s upcoming sci-fi epic, Gravity. The studio unleashed the striking image on Twitter with the tagline “Don’t Let Go”.

The film stars George Clooney and Sandra Bullock, and we should find out even more soon; Warner Bros. plans to release the first trailer on Friday. For now, here’s the synopsis:

Dr. Ryan Stone (Bullock) is a brilliant medical engineer on her first shuttle mission, with veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky (Clooney). But on a seemingly routine spacewalk, disaster strikes. The shuttle is destroyed, leaving Stone and Kowalsky completely alone—tethered to nothing but each other and spiraling out into the blackness. The deafening silence tells them they have lost any link to Earth…and any chance for rescue. As fear turns to panic, every gulp of air eats away at what little oxygen is left. But the only way home may be to go further out into the terrifying expanse of space.

Cuarón is responsible for the utterly beautiful Children of Men (which ranks an impressive #290 on the global Flickchart), so I, for one, can’t wait for his next foray into science fiction.

Gravity is due for release on October 4.

There’s no escaping the fact that, for the last several years, movie studios have gotten away from the art of a movie poster and settled for some of the most bland, generic and just-plain-godawful Photoshopped imagery to advertise their films.

Thank goodness, then, that Mondo is around to create genuine works of art based on well-loved movies, and new soon-to-be-classics. Now, here they are to save the day again, with new posters for Iron Man 3. Check them out. (Click on the images for higher resolution.)

Go Big or Go Extinct

Guillermo del Toro‘s giant mechanical monsters are takin’ it to the streets in a new poster for Pacific Rim that has hit the Internet today. We already know from trailers that the Golden Gate Bridge takes it hard; it certainly looks as though no high-rise building will be safe when del Toro’s robots take on the massive Kaiju creatures from beneath the sea.

Will del Toro’s sci-fi action epic bring something unique to the table? Or just be Transformers 4 come early? Knowing del Toro’s work, the former seems likely. Time will tell.

Pacific Rim opens July 12.

It’s become a bit of a tradition for IMAX to offer an exclusive poster to audiences who make the effort to hit the midnight screening on opening night for big movies. Iron Man 3 will be no exception.

What’s great about this poster is that it is a poster for a comic book movie actually created by a comic book artist. British artist Jock has lent his pen to Judge Dredd and The Losers, and done covers for books featuring Batman, Daredevil and Hulk. His poster features the many Iron Men seen in the trailers that will feature in the film’s epic finale. Click on the image above for a larger version.

Iron Man 3, directed by Shane Black and starring Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce and Ben Kingsley as the villainous Mandarin, opens May 3. The exclusive poster will be available only to audiences at the 12:01 am shows at IMAX theaters. You can check here to see if your local theater is participating.
