The Under-Ranked: Bridesmaids

The summer season has long been known for epic, big-budget films and broad animated comedies. But over the last few years, summer has become known for something else: The Judd Apatow Produced Comedy. Apatow has become a comedy commodity the likes that summer has never seen before. From the Will Ferrell comedies Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, Talladega Nights and Step Brothers, to his own comedy crew that has brought us Knocked Up, Superbad, Forgetting Sarah Marshall and last summer’s spin-off Get Him to the Greek, Apatow has been the king of summer comedies in recent memory. But Apatow has been known for producing comedies that mostly focus on the male mentality, but this weekend he changes that with the release of Bridesmaids. Directed by Paul Feig who has written for some of the past decades best TV shows, such as “Freaks and Geeks”, “Arrested Development”, “Mad Men” and “The Office”, and written by Kristen Wiig, Bridesmaids seems like it should be the formula for the summer’s first comedy hit. But before checking Bridesmaids out, check out some of these under-ranked films from the stars of Bridesmaids.

For the past five years, Marvel has unofficially kicked off the summer movie season with their fantastic lineup of superheroes. With big names like Wolverine, Spider-Man and Iron Man at their disposal, they have dominated the last half-decade of setting the bar high for the beginning of the summer. This weekend, they will attempt to do the same with a new film franchise based on Thor, about the strong and cocky god of thunder who gets kicked out of Asgard and forced to live on Earth. But before you start off the summer with this big-budget spectacle, check out some of these under-ranked films from the stars of Thor.

The Under-Ranked: Scream 4

It’s hard to believe that this year marks the sixteen year anniversary of the original Scream’s release and that it has been eleven years since the final film in the trilogy, Scream 3 was released. Well now the film series that single-handedly revitalized the teen horror film genre and became one of the greatest film parodies of all time, returns with Scream 4. The three main protagonists of the film will be returning with David Arquette and Courteney Cox playing the couple Dewey Riley and Gale Weathers, respectively and Neve Campbell reprising her role as Sidney Prescott. But with the beginning of a supposed new trilogy, the Ghostface Killer is gonna need some new blood to attack. So to introduce yourself to this new cast of potential victims, here are some under-ranked films from the cast of Scream 4.

The Under-Ranked: Sucker Punch

This week, director Zack Snyder releases his fifth film, Sucker Punch. This film marks Snyder’s first wholly original work, after 2004’s Dawn of the Dead and his adaptations of the famous graphic novels 300 and Watchmen and the children’s book, Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole. In Sucker Punch, Baby Doll, played by Emily Browning is left in a mental institution where she will receive a lobotomy in five days. Along with four other inmates, Baby Doll uses her imagination to create worlds that will help her and her other captives escape. But before going to see Sucker Punch this weekend, check out some of these under-ranked films from the film’s stars.
Along with Browning’s Baby Doll, Vanessa Hudgens as Blondie, and Jamie Chung’s Amber are Jena Malone and Abbie Cornish as Rocket and Sweet Pea, respectively. Both actresses have done some great independent features that are worthwhile to check out.

This weekend, one of Britain’s greatest comedy duos come together once again for Paul, about two comic book loving nerds who happen upon an alien that they befriend. Paul brings Simon Pegg and Nick Frost back together again after Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, to both costar and write. Paul features a cavalcade of some of today’s best comedic actors. But before you see Paul this weekend, you might want to check out some of their under-ranked films.
