Guilty Pleasures

It seems that without fail, I can never look away from this film once it appears on my TV screen. The appeal of this movie hurts me to the core; it brings me to a shame that would make Mother Teresa blush. I can’t imagine admitting this to anyone in my circle of family and friends. Only in the perceived safety of the internet and among fellow movie-buffs can I out-and-out say that I thoroughly enjoy Josie and the Pussycats. It’s currently at #50 on my Flickchart, just between Rachel Getting Married and Punch-Drunk Love. On the surface it’s asinine, it looks like the American version of Spice World, and it appeals to almost every feminine aspect that my feminist mother is against – but still…

It’s right around the time that John Lithgow and Jesse Ventura equip themselves with phone book armor and huge metal rods to have a death-stick prison-fight to determine who the true “Aryan Warrior” is that I realized, sweet lord this movie is bringing the ruckus. It wasn’t the first scene of awesome and it definitely wasn’t the last but it perfectly encapsulates what makes this crazy little movie one of the most memorable action movies around.

Warner Brothers just announced that Tom Hardy and Anne Hathaway have joined the cast of The Dark Knight Rises. Hardy will be playing the main villain Bane, while Hathaway will be playing the fan-favorite Catwoman. Christopher Nolan, who saved the Batman franchise with his vision and direction, says this will be his last Batman film.

I have always been a huge Batman fan. The first movie I remember seeing in theaters was Batman. I remember my jaw dropping as I watched the unlikely Michael Keaton morph into my favorite comic book hero. I’ll never forget how frightening Jack Nicholson could be every time the Joker came on-screen.

One of my favorite debates is, “Which Batman movie is the best?” You can make cases for all of them, save Batman and Robin. What’s that you say? You can’t make a case for Batman Forever being awesome? Well, challenge me all you want and tell me I’m nuts, but Batman Forever is totally a guilty pleasure for me.

For years, people have told you that you should be embarrassed for liking particular movies. They might question your taste in film because you couldn’t stop giggling at Encino Man. You appreciate many of the best movies of 1988, but you’re confused when Beaches isn’t listed in the top 20. You go to the theaters and get a ticket for Black Swan, when in reality you really wanted to see Green Hornet. Should you hide these skeletons away to the recesses of your closet to save yourself from ridicule?

No! I am sick and tired of people being embarrassed for liking silly movies. Everyone has their guilty pleasures. Take those skeletons out of the closet and enjoy them. I am here to take a stand. I want everyone to admit to themselves one guilty pleasure movie they have. Come on now, don’t be shy. It’s okay. The sheep in Hollywood aren’t going to ban you from seeing The King’s Speech or The Social Network just because you enjoyed Miley Cyrus in the The Last Song.

If nobody will go first, I’ll step up to the plate and admit that I have tons of guilty pleasures. But let’s start with #15 on my Flickchart:

The Guilty Pleasures

19, Mar 2010

We need to be clear from the beginning here. We’re not talking about bad movies you can admit you like. These are the movies you know you’re going to be teased for admitting you like it, and you don’t care. In fact, sometimes you mention you like the movie just so you can have a chance to see how people react to your confession. One of mine is Grandma’s Boy. I love the party scene, and the competitive guy obsessed with The Matrix cracks me up every time.

But then there are the guilty pleasures. We all have them. They come up in conversation, and no matter what you say, you feel bad about it. Did you praise it? You shouldn’t have; you know it’s a bad movie. Did you put it down? You shouldn’t have; you know you love it. I like Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby. I wish I didn’t. The movie really doesn’t have a lot of redeeming qualities, and yet I enjoy it immensely.
