Benedict Cumberbatch Joins ‘The Hobbit’
Those rumors that Leonard Nimoy might voice the dragon, Smaug, in Peter Jackson‘s Hobbit movies can be laid to rest. It has now been reported that Benedict Cumberbatch will give voice to the dragon and, indeed, provide his facial expressions via motion capture. In addition, Cumberbatch is set to provide the voice of the Necromancer in the two films.
Cumberbatch co-stars with Martin Freeman – who will play Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit – in the BBC’s “Sherlock”, a take on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes character set in the modern day. Cumberbatch plays Holmes to Freeman’s Watson.
The two Hobbit movies are currently in production. The first film, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, is set to open in December 2012, with The Hobbit: There and Back Again to follow a year later.
