A Flickchart Guide to TCM in May
Even though many of TCM’s fans and staffers are busy at the TCM Classic Film Festival this weekend, the channel’s programming marches on! In May you can look forward to a deep retrospective of American International Pictures, the B-level studio best known for its series of Roger Corman films that launched the careers of many New Hollywood greats, a Star of the Month tribute to rugged Robert Ryan, and a continuation of TCM’s investigation of German directors before and during Hitler’s regime, now moving from Weimar into Hollywood. It’s a great month (over 50 films from the Flickchart Top 1000!), so get those DVRs primed.
Spotlight: American International Pictures
Get ready for schlock and awe, American International Pictures is here. Founded in the mid-1950s as a distributor for youth-focused independent films, AIP served as a training ground for filmmakers like Roger Corman, who in turn mentored up-and-coming talent from Francis Ford Coppola and Martin Scorsese to Brian De Palma and Peter Bogdanovich. The youth market wasn’t really being exploited by the major studios in the ’50s and ’60s, and AIP filled a niche with low budget but innovative horror films and comedies, usually with a violent or sexy edge that set their content apart from the more established studios. Many AIP filmmakers would go on to lead New Hollywood in 1970s, when the major studios realized they needed to tap into whatever these people were doing to get the youth interested in their movies. Most of these are campy and schlocky as hell, but that’s part of the fun.

Star of the Month: Robert Ryan
Though Robert Ryan was in real life a strong supporter of civil rights and an all-around good guy, he was best-known on screen for playing violent, bigoted, and villainous characters. He’s hardly a household name now and wasn’t a major leading man star even in his own time, often playing villains or second leads, but he could hold his own on the screen against powerhouses like Barbara Stanwyck, Spencer Tracy, and John Wayne. I hadn’t really encountered Ryan much until last year, when he was in several of the noir films TCM played during the Summer of Darkness programming, and he really caught my attention instantly with his rugged charisma.
TOP FIVE
The Wild Bunch (1969; ranked #170 by 3899 users) – Sam Peckinpah is known for the ultraviolence of his westerns, which come right on the line between traditional westerns the revisionist westerns, and none is more violent nor cynical than this. Playing 5/10 at 12:00M
The Dirty Dozen (1967; ranked #320 by 3785 users) – A group of long-term or death row military prisoners are pulled together a dangerous behind-enemy-lines mission. Ryan is the by-the-book West Point commander here, rather than his more typical outside-the-law character. Playing 5/28 at 2:00am
Bad Day at Black Rock (1955; ranked #631 by 532 users) – When a stranger (Spencer Tracy) enters the town of Black Rock, he finds they have a terrible secret they’ll do anthing to keep – combines post-war examinations of some less-than-exemplary stuff we did during WWII with some McCarthy Era subtext, and a film noir/western style. Playing 5/6 at 8:00pm
The Longest Day (1962; ranked #1134 by 719 users) – Extended and detailed look at the D-Day invasions. Playing 5/27 at 11:00pm

Featured: Cinema’s Exiles – From Hitler to Hollywood
Last month TCM aired From Caligari to Hitler, featuring films from the golden age of German silent and early sound cinema, but when Hitler came to power in 1933, most of those filmmakers fled Germany to western Europe and often Hollywood. This next chapter, From Hitler to Hollywood, follows expat German filmmakers like Michael Curtiz, Ernst Lubitsch, Robert Siodmak, Fritz Lang, Billy Wilder, and more as they settle into their Hollywood careers. It kicks off with a documentary, Cinema’s Exiles: From Hitler to Hollywood (2009), which is playing 5/2 at 8:00pm and 5/3 at 11:30pm.

Ninotchka (1939; ranked #457 by 811 users) – Ernst Lubitsch should be more of a household name, but this is really the only film of his that’s well known outside of hard-core classic film/cinephile circles. It’s a good intro if you haven’t seen it, but see more! Playing 5/3 at 2:00am
Foreign Correspondent (1940; ranked #625 by 722 users) – I think all the films in this series are from Germany filmmakers, except this one, which is one of Alfred Hitchcock’s first films in the US, and a really good one to boot. Playing 5/5 at 2:00am
The Killers (1946; ranked #788 by 521 users) – Robert Siodmak brought his experience working in Germany in the 20s to make some of the finest noir films of all time, including this one, which also features Burt Lancaster’s electrifying film debut. Playing 5/4 at 10:00pm

Mary Astor – May 3
You may only be familiar with Mary Astor from a couple of her more iconic 1940s roles – the femme fatale Brigid O’Shaughnessy in The Maltese Falcon and the mother of the Smith family in Meet Me in St. Louis – but Astor’s career spans far more than that. For this tribute, TCM is focusing on her silent and pre-Code work, which is much less familiar – I actually had to add most of these to the Flickchart database. …If You Have Kids
Now, I’m being a little generous with defining “kids” movies this month. Kids generally like the zaniness of things like Bringing Up Baby and Arsenic and Old Lace, even though they’re not JUST kids movies. I’m using my judgement a lot on this section, and just trying to point out some of the programming that might be more appropriate for kids, or good entries into classic film if you’re just starting to do that with your kids.

Day by Day Picks
I’m short on time this month thanks to the TCM Film Festival (look for some rundowns of what I saw there early next week!), so I’m not going to write up each movie in the day to day here. I’ll throw in some sentences where I really want to recommend a film, but aside from that you can assume all the films listed are probably worth tossing on your DVR if you’re looking for some more stuff to watch. Sorry about the brevity!
Sunday, May 1
TOP RANKED: Gilda (1946; ranked #568 by 901 users) – Playing 5/1 at 8:00pm
WILD CARD: The Godless Girl (1929; ranked #9598 by 34 users) – If you’ve only seen Cecil B. DeMille’s epics like The Ten Commandments, please try this totally crazy silent film he made in 1929. He made more comedies than epics in the silent era, but this one is something else – about two college kids, one atheist and one Christian (yes, this is a major plot point – there’s an Atheist Club and everything), falling in love when they’re sent to reform school. Every plot twist is like “whoa, WHAT is happening now?” It’s bizarre and crazy and hilarious and awesome. Playing 5/1 at 12:00M
Monday, May 2
TOP RANKED: Casablanca (1942; ranked #14 by 41083 users) – Playing 5/2 at 10:15pm
WILD CARD: Three Smart Girls (1936; ranked #11471 by 28 users) – Even fans of musicals may not have heard of Deanna Durbin, as she’s largely been forgotten these days, but in her heyday (1936-1942 or so), she was one of the most popular stars in Hollywood, and this is one of her best films. She’s delightful. Playing 5/3 at 12:15am
Tuesday, May 3
TOP RANKED: Fury (1936; ranked #1399 by 212 users) – Playing 5/3 at 9:45pm
WILD CARD: Mad Love (1935; ranked #2683 by 177 users) – Reviewed as one of Flickchart’s Top Ten Films of 1935. Playing 5/4 at 1:45am
Wednesday, May 4
TOP RANKED: Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961; ranked #347 by 8477 users) – Playing 5/4 at 6:00pm
WILD CARD: A Foreign Affair (1948; ranked #5096 by 101 users) – Not one of Wilder’s best, but notable for being one of the first films shot in Germany post-WWII, and also for its frank and unexpected portrayal of an ex-Nazi prostitute by Marlene Dietrich. Playing 5/4 at 12:00M
Thursday, May 5
TOP RANKED: A Night at the Opera (1935; ranked #205 by 2365 users) – Playing 5/5 at 1:00pm
WILD CARD: A Bucket of Blood (1959; ranked #4135 by 193 users) – Playing 5/5 at 11:00pm
Friday, May 6
TOP RANKED: Bad Day at Black Rock (1955; ranked #631 by 532 users) – Playing 5/6 at 8:00pm
WILD CARD: Clash by Night (1952; ranked #4002 by 158 users) – In Robert Ryan’s intro, I mentioned him holding his own against Barbara Stanwyck – this is that film. It’s kind of a nasty little film about unhappy people, but seeing the two of them lay into each other is actually pleasurable in a weird way. Playing 5/6 at 1:30pm
Saturday, May 7
TOP RANKED: All About Eve (1950; ranked #124 by 4479 users) – Playing 5/7 at 8:00pm
WILD CARD: David Lynch Shorts (1966-1995) – An unusual program for TCM, but one that may be quite intriguing to anyone interested in cult/experimental stuff. Playing 5/8 at 2:00am
Sunday, May 8
TOP RANKED: L’Avventura (1960; ranked #445 by 550 users) – Playing 5/9 at 2:00am
WILD CARD: Bunny Lake is Missing (1965; ranked #3018 by 192 users) – Playing 5/8 at 10:00am
Monday, May 9
TOP RANKED: The Bat Whispers (1930; ranked #10185 by 35 users) – This is a bizarre day when something ranked under #10000 is the top-ranked film. :) I know nothing about this, but it’s Pre-Code so I’d probably have fun watching it! Playing 5/9 at 6:30am
WILD CARD: Hollywood Canteen (1944; ranked #15005 by 5 users) – If you ever wanted to see all of Warner Bros. contract stars in one film, many of them singing and dancing (including Bette Davis!), this is your chance. The Hollywood Canteen was a real place, run in large part by David, where Hollywood celebrities entertained servicemen during WWII – the film both evoked the place and served as a showcase for all of Warner’s stars, plus all the profits went back to the war effort. Playing 5/10 at 1:15am
Tuesday, May 10
TOP RANKED: Citizen Kane (1941; ranked #27 by 34349 users) – Playing 5/10 at 8:00pm
WILD CARD: Carefree (1938; ranked #4431 by 82 users) – One of Fred and Ginger’s least-known films, but I’ve always had a huge soft spot for it. Ginger get into psychology and hypnotism and though the music/dancing isn’t quite at their top level, the goofiness of the story makes up for it (if you like goofy stories, that is, which I do). Playing 5/10 at 3:00pm
Wednesday, May 11
TOP RANKED: The French Connection (1971; ranked #174 by 7144 users) – Playing 5/11 at 12:00M
WILD CARD: The Charge of the Light Brigade (1936; ranked #6824 by 120 users) – One of the many Flynn-de Havilland screen pairings, this one based very very loosely on Kipling’s famous poem. Playing 5/11 at 3:45pm
Thursday, May 12
TOP RANKED: The Philadelphia Story (1940; ranked #95 by 2808 users) – Playing 5/12 at 12N
WILD CARD: Dementia 13 (1963; ranked #7568 by 245 users) – Francis Ford Coppola’s debut film, for American International Pictures. Playing 5/12 at 11:00pm
Friday, May 13
TOP RANKED: Billy Budd (1962; ranked #9102 by 35 users) – Playing 5/13 at 8:00pm
WILD CARD: Play Girl (1932; unranked by 0 users) – This is TRULY a wild card pick – I know nothing about it except that it’s an obscure Pre-Code that I had to add to the database. If you’re gonna take a wild card chance on anything, a Pre-Code is the way to go. Playing 5/13 at 7:30am SUBMITTED
Saturday, May 14
TOP RANKED: The Awful Truth (1937; ranked #504 by 733 users) – Playing 5/14 at 8:00pm
