A Flickchart Guide to TCM in May
TCM Spotlight: Creature Features
This month’s TCM Spotlight highlights that staple of b-movie horror and sci-fi, the creature feature, which had kind of golden era in the late 1950s. This is a schlockier Spotlight than TCM often does, so if you’re a big fan of the TCM Drive In Mob programming, then you’re all set – if not, you may want to focus elsewhere this month! Still, the top three of these at least are well worth your time, if only to get a passing knowledge of the genre.
TOP THREE
King Kong (1933; ranked #636 by 12657 users) – The original big ape movie might be a little creaky around the edges today, but despite a little jerkiness, the animatronics are pretty amazing, and it’s still incredible how something that looks so admittedly fake can still play on our emotions so much. Playing 5/4 at 11:15pm
Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954; ranked #1408 by 1332 users) – After several years of letting their main monsters lie fallow, Universal picked up the reins with an original story of a prehistoric lake creature who’s equal parts curious and deadly. Playing 5/4 at 8:00pm
Them! (1954; ranked #1651 by 754 users) – One of my personal favorites of the 1950s nuclear paranoia creature features, in this one radiation makes ants grow to enormous size and our intrepid scientists have to find a way to stop them from taking over. Playing 5/18 at 8:00pm

Star of the Month: Clark Gable
Clark Gable is one of the iconic classic Hollywood stars, having earned his epithet “the King of Hollywood” as the most popular actor by far in the 1930s. I suspect any film buff could name at least three to five of his movies. But his filmography goes very deep, and TCM is mining right down to the most obscure this month, with a particular bounty for Pre-Code fans. Gable only won one Oscar, for the 1934 screwball comedy progenitor, It Happened One Night. He’d be nominated twice more, for Mutiny on the Bounty and Gone with the Wind, but perhaps his finest role somehow escaped the Academy’s notice – his final role in The Misfits. Those films are, not coincidentally, top Flickchart’s rankings for TCM’s Gable programming. He won the hearts of America, though, playing roguish lovers in films like Red Dust and Hold Your Man, romancing top Hollywood glamour like Jean Harlow, Loretta Young, and Norma Shearer. Gable had a much-hushed affair with Young, and a much-publicized marriage to Carole Lombard, who truly was the love of his life. When she died in a plane crash on a war bond tour, he was devastated and didn’t return to the screen for many years. When he did, he was just as great, but with a tinge of sadness that never fully went away.
TOP TEN
It Happened One Night (1934; ranked #72 by 3681 users) – They say that Gable’s revelation of no undershirt when he removes his shirt killed the undershirt business in 1934. True or not, it’s a sign of the power of Gable at the time, even though this film was made at Poverty Row studio Columbia, where Gable was lent by MGM as punishment for not playing nice with the roles they wanted him to play. An Oscar is some punishment. Playing 5/2 at 8:00pm
Gone with the Wind (1939; ranked #504 by 30889 users) – Lots of names were in the hat to play Rhett Butler in the adaptation of Margaret Mitchell’s bestseller, but the general public had only one actor in mind – Gable. They got him, and he got one of the most memorable roles of his career. Playing 5/23 at 8:00pm
Mutiny on the Bounty (1935; ranked #1150 by 691 users) – This version of the famous mutiny won Best Picture, but the three lead actors (Gable, Charles Laughton, Franchot Tone) all got nominated and likely split the vote – the Oscar went to Victor McLaglen for The Informer. Playing 5/2 at 11:30pm
The Misfits (1961; ranked #1548 by 499 users) – The final film for both Gable and Marilyn Monroe, both of them play their parts with a world-weariness that perhaps hints at the end of their careers, yet both are also on top of their game as well. An unusual western, but a great film. Playing 5/31 at 12:15am
Run Silent, Run Deep (1958; ranked #3383 by 193 users) – After losing a sub to the Japanese in WWII, Gable’s captain is hell-bent on revenge, to the point of endangering his new crew. Playing 5/31 at 2:30am
San Francisco (1936; ranked #3742 by 209 users) – Gable romances Jeanette MacDonald with the backdrop of the devastating San Francisco earthquake. The title song became a signature number for MacDonald, which I’ve never totally understood, since it’s all wrong for her voice, but I digress. Playing 5/24 at 12:15am
Night Nurse (1931; ranked #4632 by 89 users) – Barbara Stanwyck is the night nurse of the title, who slowly realizes that the child she cares for is being poisoned. Gable is a much more nefarious character here than we’re used to him playing. Playing 5/3 at 5:00am
Red Dust (1932; ranked #5379 by 72 users) – This is honestly one of my favorite Pre-Codes of all time, with Clark Gable, Jean Harlow, and Mary Astor playing a love triangle on a sweaty rubber plantation (the fourth player, Astor’s husband Gene Raymond, is really only there as a test of Astor’s purity, not as an actual party to the love tangle). Harlow is particularly wonderful as the girl who’s been up and down the river a few times, but is far more likable than Astor’s buttoned-up plantation newbie. Playing 5/16 at 11:00pm
Manhattan Melodrama (1934; ranked #5985 by 88 users) – A standard story of childhood friends ending up on opposite sides of the law as adults, but with not only Gable, but an early pairing of William Powell and Myrna Loy, I’ll be more than happy to check it out. Playing 5/17 at 12:45am
Mogambo (1953; ranked #7129 by 118 users) – A remake of Red Dust twenty years later, with Gable in the same role – seems like a bad idea, not least because of losing the Pre-Code vibe, but John Huston makes this pretty solid in its own right, with Ava Gardner and Grace Kelly stepping into the female roles (I’ll let you guess which is the prude and which is the loose women). Playing 5/30 at 10:00pm

Marathons and Tributes
Danielle Darrieux’s 100th Birthday – May 1
Danielle Darrieux is less well-known in the United States, but she was one of France’s major stars of the 1930s-1960s, and even into the 2000s, playing the matriarch of the clan in Francois Ozon’s 8 Women. She was also one of the few French actresses of the era to flip-flop between France and Hollywood. TCM’s tribute has a taste of both, but the pair of Max Ophuls films, La Ronde and The Earrings of Madame de… are the highlight of her career.

Busby Berkeley – May 4
One of the great choreographers of the classic Hollywood musical, inventing a very cinema-specific geometric style of dance. For some reason this tribute is playing in reverse chronological order, but whatever, the dances are still amazing no matter what order you watch them in.

Day by Day
Monday, May 1
Top Ranked: Gilda (1946; ranked #552 by 977 users) – In one way, Gilda (Rita Hayworth) is a quintessential femme fatale – but in another way, she’s just playing a part she’s forced into by her former lover. Either way, the film is a riveting noir, with plenty of blame to go around (and not just on Mame, as the song suggests). Playing 5/1 at 9:30am
Wild Card: The Earrings of Madame de… (1953; ranked #1081 by 314 users) – Danielle Darrieux is enchanting as the titular character, whose earrings are sold, given, and bought in a continuous cycle, but it’s really Max Ophuls’ circular camera, mimicking the circular movement of the earrings, that’s the star of this one. Playing 5/1 at 11:15pm
Tuesday, May 2
Top Ranked: It Happened One Night (1934; ranked #72 by 3681 users) – Possibly the first true screwball comedy, with Claudette Colbert the runaway heiress and Clark Gable the reporter cozying up to her for a scoop on a sort of battle of the sexes road movie that sometimes plays a little dated today, but is still uproariously funny. Playing 5/2 at 8:00pm
Wild Card: Night Nurse (1931; ranked #4632 by 89 users) – Playing 5/3 at 5:00am
Wednesday, May 3
Top Ranked: Hell Divers (1931; ranked #13215 by 33 users) – This day is “obscure Clark Gable film day” as you can see by the ranking and user number of this one. I know literally nothing about it. Playing 5/3 at 11:00am
Wild Card: Night Flight (1933; ranked #14304 by 9 users) – Oddly enough, I have seen this even more obscure Gable film, and would recommend it pretty wholeheartedly to people who enjoy a good Pre-Code adventure film. It’s about the first night flights for cargo airplanes, which was a very dangerous thing in the 1930s. John and Lionel Barrymore also play at one-upping each other. Playing 5/3 at 4:30pm
Thursday, May 4
Top Ranked: King Kong (1933; ranked #636 by 12657 users) – Playing 5/4 at 11:15pm
Wild Card: Footlight Parade (1933; ranked #3298 by 147 users) – All the Busby Berkeley films playing are worth watching, but even though I love Gold Diggers of 1933 and 42nd Street the most, I’ll give a nod to this slightly less well-known film that gives them quite a run for their money. Playing 5/4 at 4:15pm
Friday, May 5
Top Ranked: McCabe and Mrs. Miller (1971; ranked #283 by 1195 users) – Playing 5/6 at 3:30am
Wild Card: The Sugarland Express (1974; ranked #2390 by 739 users) – An early Steven Spielberg film following more of a road movie pattern than he’s usually known for. Playing 5/5 at 8:00pm
Saturday, May 6
Top Ranked: Spartacus (1960; ranked #527 by 11060 users) – This sword and sandal epic was directed by Stanley Kubrick, but it’s really more of a Kirk Douglas film – he produced and starred, and exercised a lot of control over the production, including the decision to credit blacklisted writer Dalton Trumbo with his real name, a gutsy move that began to break the McCarthy blacklist’s hold on Hollywood. Playing 5/6 at 4:30pm
Wild Card: Lust for Life (1956; ranked #3809 by 198 users) – Here Douglas plays painter Vincent Van Gogh; Anthony Quinn won a supporting actor as Paul Gauguin. Playing 5/7 at 12:15am
Sunday, May 7
Top Ranked: The Night of the Hunter (1955; ranked #39 by 2598 users) – Playing 5/7 at 2:00pm
Wild Card: The Pink Panther (1964; ranked #1135 by 5122 users) – Playing 5/7 at 3:45pm
Monday, May 8
Top Ranked: The Far Country (1955; ranked #4524 by 155 users) – One of the cycle of James Stewart-Anthony Mann westerns, all of which are well worth watching. Playing 5/8 at 8:00pm
Wild Card: Mr. Lucky (1943; ranked #5554 by 86 users) – A nearly-forgotten Cary Grant vehicle that’s still a lot of good fun – the cockney rhyming slang section is particularly good. Playing 5/8 at 4:30pm
Tuesday, May 9
Top Ranked: Meet Me in St. Louis (1944; ranked #731 by 1355 users) – Playing 5/9 at 6:00pm
Wild Card: Dancing Lady (1933; ranked #11249 by 27 users) – A lot of obscure Clark Gable films to choose from today – I chose this one because, well, it’s Fred Astaire’s debut film. He was a well-known Broadway dancer (partnered with his sister Adele) and he played himself here, dancing with Joan Crawford. Playing 5/10 at 1:00am
Wednesday, May 10
Top Ranked: How to Marry a Millionaire (1953; ranked #2352 by 411 users) – Playing 5/10 at 10:00pm
Wild Card: Model Shop (1969; ranked #17091 by 20 users) – An unusual and admittedly uneven American film from French director Jacques Demy, but still quite interesting for fans of his. Playing 5/11 at 4:00am
Thursday, May 11
Top Ranked: Blithe Spirit (1945; ranked #4391 by 120 users) – Before David Lean was the director of epics like Lawrence of Arabia and Doctor Zhivago, he made a series of light films with playwright Noel Coward, and this may be the lightest of them all, a breezy supernatural comedy with a young Rex Harrison and his new wife haunted by his first wife. Playing 5/11 at 9:45am
Wild Card: The Wacky World of Mother Goose (1967; ranked #22760 by 7 users) – I have never heard of this movie before, but with a title like that, how can I ignore it? Apparently it’s a Rankin-Bass animated feature. Playing 5/11 at 6:15pm
Friday, May 12
Top Ranked: The Graduate (1967; ranked #148 by 34942 users) – Playing 5/12 at 8:00pm
Wild Card: The Return of Dr. X (1939; ranked #10898 by 80 users) – A lot of great 1967 films playing today, but you know all about those already – why not check out this bizarre little horror film with Humphrey Bogart as a suspicious scientist? Playing 5/12 at 6:45am
Saturday, May 13
Top Ranked: East of Eden (1955; ranked #455 by 936 users) – Playing 5/13 at 8:00pm
Wild Card: Gypsy (1962; ranked #4884 by 157 users) – A musical biography of striptease pioneer Gypsy Rose Lee, but really, the main character here is her mother Rose, the absolutely quintessence of stage motherdom. Created on stage by the incomparable Ethel Merman, Rosalind Russell takes on the challenge in the film, and carries it off quite well, even the iconic “Rose’s Turn” number putting herself the spotlight. Playing 5/14 at 5:30am
Sunday, May 14
Top Ranked: Mildred Pierce (1945; ranked #524 by 941 users) – Playing 5/14 at 2:00pm
Wild Card: The Prowler (1951; ranked #6906 by 51 users) – Noir Alley this week looks at a nasty little b-movie noir from Joseph Losey ostensibly about a prowler, but really about one of the most morally corrupt cops in all of noir. Playing 5/14 at 10:00am
Monday, May 15
Top Ranked: Blood Simple (1984; ranked #302 by 3699 users) – You get to run the gamut of TCM’s offerings tonight, with a very new (for them) Coen film…. Playing 5/15 at 12:00N
Wild Card: Lumiere’s First Picture Shows (1895-1897) – ….and some of the oldest films ever made, actualities made by the Lumiere brothers at the dawn of cinema history. It’s quite a ride. Playing 5/16 at 3:30am
Tuesday, May 16
Top Ranked: Advise & Consent (1962; ranked #2319 by 187 users) – Playing 5/16 at 3:45pm
Wild Card: Red Dust (1932; ranked #5379 by 72 users) – Playing 5/16 at 11:00pm
Wednesday, May 17
Top Ranked: I Walked With a Zombie (1943; ranked #981 by 658 users) – Ah, classic voodoo zombies in the deep jungle casting spells on white women – this surprisingly literary horror film from Val Lewton (it’s basically Jane Eyre in the tropics) is like a fever dream of post-colonial theory. Oh, and it’s a pretty dang fun movie, too. Playing 5/17 at 11:30pm
Wild Card: Of Human Bondage (1934; ranked #5248 by 101 users) – Bette Davis won her first Oscar for 1935’s Dangerous, but it’s often assumed that it was something of a consolation prize for not having won it for this Somerset Maugham adaptation, one of the first times she broke out of Warner Bros. doomed attempts to make her into a glamour girl and proved her actual acting chops. Playing 5/18 at 2:45am
Thursday, May 18
Top Ranked: Them! (1954; ranked #1651 by 754 users) – Playing 5/18 at 8:00pm
Wild Card: The Spanish Main (1945; ranked #11796 by 22 users) – Let me just say, with her red hair and fiery personality, Maureen O’Hara was basically born to play a Technicolor pirate queen – captain Paul Henried isn’t quite her match, but it’s a fun swashbuckler just the same. Playing 5/18 at 8:45am
Friday, May 19
Top Ranked: Cool Hand Luke (1967; ranked #97 by 10383 users) – Playing 5/19 at 8:00pm
Wild Card: Point Blank (1967; ranked #746 by 747 users) – A very patient but rewarding crime movie, with Lee Marvin left for dead after a bank heist, then relentlessly going up the chain of his former gang to get the money he’s owed. Playing 5/20 at 12:15am
Saturday, May 20
Top Ranked: Eraserhead (1977; ranked #497 by 4596 users) – Playing 5/21 at 2:00am
Wild Card: You Were Never Lovelier (1942; ranked #6685 by 77 users) – After finishing his run of films with Ginger Rogers, Fred Astaire danced with a couple of other partners, then did a set of two films with Rita Hayworth; this one is generally considered the better of the two, and Hayworth’s dancing background (as part of the Cansino family of entertainers) stood her in good stead opposite Astaire. Playing 5/20 at 10:15pm

Wild Card: Love (1927; ranked #9677 by 33 users) – Greta Garbo starred in 1935’s Anna Karenina but that wasn’t the first time she’d played the role – this silent film is also an adaptation of Tolstoy’s famous novel, with frequent Garbo costar John Gilbert as the dashing Count Vronsky. Top Ranked: What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962; ranked #462 by 1624 users) – Playing 5/22 at 8:00pm
Wild Card: Strait-Jacket (1964; ranked #8546 by 74 users) – I picked the mostly because it makes such a delicious double-feature with Baby Jane, except this time Joan Crawford gets to play the demented older lady, wielding an axe no less. This is a William Castle film, one of the few without a ridiculous gimmick. Crawford herself was the gimmick, I suppose! Playing 5/23 at 12:30am

Top Ranked: The Searchers (1956; ranked #106 by 4899 users) – Playing 5/23 at 2:00pm
Wild Card: Fury (1936; ranked #1352 by 231 users) – Fritz Lang’s first American film was quite a doozy, starring Spencer Tracy as an innocent man nearly lynched by a mob, who then turns the tables to get revenge. Playing 5/23 at 9:15am

Top Ranked: Camelot (1967; ranked #2913 by 451 users) – I have great love for this Lerner and Lowe musical about King Arthur and his knights of the round table – it’s both spry and somber, sprightly and decadent. It tends to get lumped in with the trend of overblown 1960s musicals, but it deserves a renaissance. Playing 5/25 at 2:45am
Wild Card: Adventure (1945; ranked #16833 by 5 users) – After Carole Lombard died in 1942, Clark Gable stayed off the screen grieving for three years. This was his return to the screen, gleefully touted with the tagline “Gable’s back and Garson’s got him!” (that’d be Greer Garson, of Mrs. Miniver). I haven’t seen the film, but I think I’d be thinking of Carole Lombard the whole time. Playing 5/24 at 1:30pm

Top Ranked: Suddenly, Last Summer (1960; ranked #2858 by 191 users) – Katharine Hepburn talks Montgomery Clift into giving her niece Elizabeth Taylor a lobotomy. Wholesome family. Playing 5/25 at 10:30am
Wild Card: In the Good Old Summertime (1949; ranked #5766 by 94 users) – Musical remake of The Shop Around the Corner isn’t quite as charming, but I mean, it’s Judy Garland, so it’s still pretty good! Playing 5/25 at 6:15pm

Top Ranked: Sergeant York (1941; ranked #1410 by 504 users) – Biopic of WWI hero Alvin C. York, a pacifist who decided the best way of sticking to his morals was to get the war over as fast as possible by killing as many Germans as possible. Won an Oscar for Gary Cooper. Playing 5/26 at 10:00pm
Wild Card: The Wings of Eagles (1957; ranked #7627 by 80 users) – One of many films John Ford, John Wayne, and Maureen O’Hara made together, but this one is the relatively contemporary story of real-life Navy flier Frank “Spig” Wead, so if westerns don’t appeal to you, maybe check this one out. Playing 5/26 at 8:00pm

Top Ranked: Mister Roberts (1955; ranked #879 by 677 users) – Jack Lemmon made a splash in his screen debut as lazy Ensign Pulver, but the rest of the cast (Henry Fonda, James Cagney, William Powell) are not slouches either in this comedy-drama about a WWII Navy ship that’s about as far from the action as possible. Playing 5/27 at 10:30pm
Wild Card: The Steel Helmet (1951; ranked #3102 by 132 users) – Not too many films about the Korean War were made during it, but Samuel Fuller stepped up to the challenge here. Playing 5/27 at 4:30pm

Top Ranked: Saboteur (1942; ranked #902 by 1181 users) – Even lesser Hitchcock films usually have some iconic imagery, and in this one, it’s a man hanging off the Statue of Liberty, Robert Cummings trying to pull him up. The rest of the film is a typical (and typically enjoyable) Hitchcock chase/espionage movie. Playing 5/28 at 4:15pm
Wild Card: Tora! Tora! Tora! (1970; ranked #1850 by 1073 users) – Perhaps the definitive fictional film about Pearl Harbor, showing the Japanese planning the attack and the series of blunders made by US officials in the days leading up to the attack. Playing 5/28 at 10:30pm

Top Ranked: Marty (1955; ranked #555 by 788 users) – Playing 5/31 at 10:15am
Wild Card: To Please a Lady (1950; ranked #16069 by 13 users) – There were a lot of Gable films I haven’t seen and don’t know much about playing today, so I just picked the one that costars Barbara Stanwyck. Having Stanwyck in a movie pretty much guarantees it’ll be enjoyable. Playing 5/31 at 6:00am
