A Flickchart Guide to TCM in March
This month brings sad news to fans of TCM, as long-time host Robert Osborne passed away yesterday at the age of 84. Osborne became the main host of TCM at its very inception in 1994, and has been its public face ever since, hosting innumerable film intros and interviews, as well as representing the channel in person at the annual TCM Festival since 2010. He was a consummate ambassador for classic film, highly knowledgeable about film history, and enjoyed great rapport with everyone he interviewed. Perhaps most importantly to those of us in the wider classic film community, Osborne was always warm and genuine with fans. Rest in peace, Robert. We will miss you and your enthusiasm for classic film.
Now, as Robert would want us to, let’s watch some movies. Rather than spread out their Spotlight and Star of the Month selections throughout the month like usual, this month TCM is front loading the star of the month programming this week, March 6-11, and the Spotlight programming from March 20-25. So consider each a mini festival and enjoy!
Star of the Month: Richard Burton
Richard Burton is perhaps best known today, unfortunately, for being Elizabeth Taylor’s on again, off again husband. They began a scandalous affair on the set of Cleopatra, a massive film remembered as a massive flop (though it really wasn’t one, it was just far too expensive), and had one of the most tumultuous and highly publicized marriages in Hollywood history. However, Burton was also a great actor, with Shakespearean bearing tempered by great soulfulness. A lot of the films playing in this series are pretty obscure by Flickchart standards, so if you’re interested in learning more about Burton and his work, this is a great place to start.

TCM Spotlight: March Malice
Someone at TCM thinks they’re very clever for playing off March Madness with this spotlight title, and okay, I admit it, I laughed. But these films are pretty much no laughing matter – these dark films plumb the depths of human (and sometimes inhuman) nature, with lots of noir, psychological thrillers, horror, crime dramas, and even fantasy. That said, these are in no way chores to watch, but are some of the greatest and most entertaining films ever made. Bring on March Malice!

Barbara Stanwyck
I will always highlight Barbara Stanwyck films, but even I have to admit the obscurity of these. I haven’t seen any of them, and only have a couple of them on my radar, and I consider myself fairly well-versed in Stanwyck’s filmography. Day by Day
Tuesday, March 7
Top Ranked: The Night of the Iguana (1964; ranked #3335 by 158 users) – A fine pedigree on display here – Richard Burton, Ava Gardner, and Deborah Kerr in a John Huston film based on a Tennessee Williams play, about a defrocked Episcopal priest taking a tour group to Mexico and the fraught events that ensue. Playing 3/7 at 8:00pm
Wild Card: Look Back in Anger (1959; ranked #8292 by 56 users) – This Burton starrer is one of the seminal films of the British New Wave, which often focused on “angry young men” struggling with class differences and finding their place in the world. Playing 3/8 at 1:00am
Wednesday, March 8
Top Ranked: Rebel without a Cause (1955; ranked #266 by 5971 users) – Playing 3/8 at 6:00pm
Wild Card: Wanda (1970; ranked #8590 by 51 users) – The sole feature film for actress and stage director Barbara Loden is something of a feminist milestone, and a film very high on my own watchlist. Playing 3/8 at 12:30pm
Thursday, March 9
Top Ranked: Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966; ranked #234 by 1671 users) – This film is hard to watch, a portrait of a marriage falling apart in a histrionic excess of mutual destruction. But perhaps because Taylor and Burton knew how to push each others buttons, it’s also intensely moving and compelling. Burton especially has some quiet scenes that balance the shrillness that threatens much of the picture. Playing 3/9 at 8:00pm
Wild Card: The V.I.P.s (1963; ranked #15513 by 36 users) – One of several Taylor/Burton pairings playing tonight – i’ve seen none of them, so I picked this one based on the fact that it won Margaret Rutherford a Best Supporting Actress Oscar. Playing 3/9 at 10:30pm
Friday, March 10
Top Ranked: Rope (1948; ranked #126 by 5193 users) – Playing 3/10 at 6:30pm
Wild Card: Lady in the Lake (1947; ranked #5265 by 130 users) – The first-person film has never really taken off, with few films committing to it as completely as this one, where you never see star (and director) Robert Montgomery unless he’s looking in a mirror. It ends up pretty awkward, but you gotta try something once, right? Playing 3/10 at 4:30pm
Saturday, March 11
Top Ranked: The Four Feathers (1939; ranked #2659 by 237 users) – Playing 3/11 at 6:30am
Wild Card: The Private Life of Henry VIII (1933; ranked #4470 by 121 users) – Charles Laughton won a Best Actor Oscar for the role that was basically made for him, despite being historical – King Henry VIII of England. He’d reprise the role twenty years later in Young Bess with no less panache. Playing 3/11 at 4:45am
Sunday, March 12
Top Ranked: Detour (1945; ranked #1262 by 506 users) – One of the most low budget and quintessential noirs ever, with the most fatalist of heroes and the most fatale of femmes. Playing 3/12 at 10:00am
Wild Card: Carmen Jones (1954; ranked #5257 by 192 users) – This is part of a short tribute to Dorothy Dandridge, an African American actress who lived several decades too early for her talent to really be used well – when she got the chance to lead, she shone, and that’s the case here, even though I’m not totally convinced personally that the opera music works within the popular context. Playing 3/12 at 8:00pm
Monday, March 13
Top Ranked: Sylvia Scarlett (1935; ranked #8902 by 78 users) – The first film to costar Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant is a bit of an odd one, with Hepburn spending most of the movie cross-dressing as a boy to escape the police. Playing 3/13 at 11:15am
Wild Card: Christopher Strong (1933; ranked #13208 by 16 users) – Dorothy Arzner was one of the few female directors of the studio era, and this is one of her best-known films, with Katharine Hepburn as a strong-willed aviator who falls in love with a married MP. Playing 3/13 at 6:15am
Tuesday, March 14
Top Ranked: The Gold Rush (1925; ranked #107 by 2173 users) – Playing 3/14 at 7:45am
Wild Card: Klute (1971; ranked #1595 by 554 users) – Best Actress Oscar winner for Jane Fonda as a high-price prostitute helping detective Donald Sutherland with a case. Very solid neo-noir, I’m surprised it’s not higher on globals. Playing 3/14 at 7:00pm
Wednesday, March 15
Top Ranked: The Maltese Falcon (1941; ranked #100 by 1435 users) – Playing 3/15 at 11:00am
Wild Card: Jeopardy (1953; ranked #11242 by 25 users) – A lesser-known noirish drama, with Barbara Stanwyck as a woman trying to get help for her stranded husband and finding only a sneering criminal. Playing 3/15 at 5:00pm
Thursday, March 16
Top Ranked: The Band Wagon (1953; ranked #1622 by 372 users) – Playing 3/16 at 1:30pm
Wild Card: Words and Music (1948; ranked #14908 by 28 users) – Musical biopics were all the rage in the 1940s, and this one of composer Jerome Kern is mostly worthwhile for the extended medley from Show Boat featuring Lena Horne as the mixed-race Julie, and the Slaughter on 10th Avenue ballet featuring Gene Kelly and Vera-Ellen. Playing 3/16 at 9:30am
Friday, March 17
Top Ranked: The Quiet Man (1952; ranked #488 by 1587 users) – John Ford’s love letter to his ancestral homeland is a little awkward in terms of gender politics, but the strong color palette and performances by John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara are still worth checking out. Playing 3/17 at 9:30pm
Wild Card: The Informer (1935; ranked #2797 by 248 users) – Make it a John-Ford-on-Ireland double feature, with Victor McLaglen (who won an Oscar) informing on his IRA buddies for money to go to America and dealing with the guilt he suffers for that decision. Playing 3/17 at 6:15pm
Saturday, March 18
Top Ranked: Shock Corridor (1963; ranked #1309 by 331 users) – A journalist pretends to be insane to get an inside look at an insane asylum. What he finds is, well, shocking. Playing 3/19 at 4:00am
Wild Card: Gunfight at the O.K. Corral (1957; ranked #2811 by 274 users) – Playing 3/18 at 8:00pm
Sunday, March 19
Top Ranked: Sweet Smell of Success (1957; ranked #128 by 1066 users) – Acerbic black comedy doesn’t get better than this. Playing 3/19 at 2:15pm
Wild Card: Good Morning (1959; ranked #2507 by 131 users) – It’s kind of a tragedy that this charming Yasujiro Ozu film (about a pair of brothers trying to earn a a television set) is was low-ranked as it is. Playing 3/20 at 3:45am
Monday, March 20
Top Ranked: Night of the Hunter (1955; ranked #40 by 3559 users) – Playing 3/20 at 12:00M
Wild Card: The Letter (1940; ranked #2780 by 205 users) – Bette Davis shoots a man in cold blood on the front steps of her husband’s tropical plantation – but was it really self-defense? Playing 3/20 at 4:00pm
Tuesday, March 21
Top Ranked: M (1931; ranked #31 by 4013 users) – Playing 3/21 at 11:00am
Wild Card: White Heat (1949; ranked #289 by 922 users) – This wasn’t actually James Cagney’s final gangster role, but it might as well be, with an iconic final image that sort of closes the book on the whole crime/gangster genre in classical cinema. Playing 3/22 at 3:30am
Wednesday, March 22
Top Ranked: Touch of Evil (1958; ranked #57 by 3531 users) – It’s easy to see why this is considered the final classic-era noir – it basically represents the exhaustion of the genre. There was nowhere else to go without reinventing itself. Playing 3/23 at 12:15am
Wild Card: Gaslight (1944; ranked #645 by 711 users) – “Gaslighting” has become a common term in our culture because of this movie. That’s reason enough to see it. The fact that it’s a taut little gothic thriller is also a good reason. Playing 3/22 at 11:30am
Thursday, March 23
Top Ranked: Casablanca (1942; ranked #15 by 42539 users) – Playing 3/23 at 6:00pm

Saturday, March 25
Top Ranked: Dial M for Murder (1954; ranked #189 by 4949 users) – Playing 3/25 at 3:45pm
Wild Card: Hausu (1977; ranked #762 by 821 users) – Imagine a Japanese horror film where the director knew almost nothing about making movies and just decided to throw every filmmaking technique he’d ever seen at the screen and see what happened. It’s crazy sauce and wonderful. Playing 3/26 at 2:00am
Sunday, March 26
Top Ranked: Sullivan’s Travels (1942; ranked #177 by 1197 users) – Maybe it’s a little disingenuous for a writer/director known for his comedies (like Preston Sturges was) to make a movie about the importance of comedy, but I mean… he’s not wrong. Playing 3/26 at 2:15pm
Wild Card: Hour of the Wolf (1968; ranked #836 by 566 users) – You don’t really think of Ingmar Bergman and “horror” in the same sentence, but this is the closest thing he ever made to a horror film, playing up the psychological horror to the nth degree. Playing 3/27 at 4:00am
Monday, March 27
Top Ranked: The Freshman (1925; ranked #1849 by 278 users) – Playing 3/27 at 7:15am
Wild Card: Kiss Me Kate (1953; ranked #4648 by 194 users) – Cole Porter takes on Shakespeare in one of the better pop versions of his plays, weaving an offstage contentious relationship with the onstage performance of The Taming of the Shrew. The cast is all solid, but Ann Miller is especially memorable. Playing 3/27 at 8:00pm
Tuesday, March 28
Top Ranked: Roman Holiday (1953; ranked #213 by 4150 users) – Playing 3/28 at 2:45am
Wild Card: The Three Faces of Eve (1957; ranked #5892 by 110 users) – One of the first films to deal with multiple personality disorder seriously, with Joanne Woodward playing Eve, who has three distinct personalities. It still plays on pop psychology to some degree, but is thoughtful and well-acted. Playing 3/28 at 8:00pm

Top Ranked: Winchester ’73 (1950; ranked #797 by 498 users) – In one of the best of the always-excellent Anthony Mann-James Stewart cycle of Westerns, a rifle makes its way around the west, with Stewart following one step behind. Playing 3/31 at 8:00pm
Wild Card: Possessed (1947; ranked #7718 by 54 users) – Femme fatales are well-known, but this film features an homme fatale (Van Heflin), dragging an obsessive and delusional Joan Crawford off the deep end. Also, a shout-out to TCM’s newest segment “Noir Alley” on Sunday mornings at 10, hosted by the founder of the Film Noir Foundation Eddie Muller. He comes out in a slick classic three-piece on this amazing dimly-lit set of like a private detective’s office except there’s a bar in the back and a smoky typewriter under yellow bulb, so amazing.
Good call! I absolutely should’ve called out the new Noir Alley programming. I’ve already been enjoying the stuff that the @NoirAlley twitter account has been putting out.
Note that in honor of Robert Osborne’s legacy, TCM will preempt their planned programming for March 18-19 and show a large collection of Robert’s best interviews and on-screen appearances.
