A Flickchart Guide to TCM in June
TCM Spotlight: Gay Hollywood
Hollywood has had an LGBT community for the entirety of its existence, though for much of Hollywood history it’s been kept in the shadows. On Thursdays in June, TCM shines its spotlight on gay Hollywood icons from the silent era through the 1980s, from silent screen actor William Haines to director George Cukor, from composer Cole Porter to playwright Tennessee Williams, as well as women like Dorothy Arzner and Linda Hunt. I’ve arranged these by their Flickchart ranking; if you’d like to see whom each film honors, check out TCM’s Spotlight page.
TOP FIVE
Psycho (1960; ranked #42 by 59961 users) – Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins) is the dark side of a “momma’s boy” in Hitchcock’s groundbreaking horror thriller. Playing 6/23 at 3:00am
Rope (1948; ranked #127 by 5252 users) – In a riff on the real-life Leopold/Loeb murder case, Farley Granger and John Dall kill a classmate for the heck of it, then hold a party with the corpse in the room. A one-room Hitchcock film that’s none-the-less thrilling. Playing 6/9 at 1:00am
Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966; ranked #231 by 1700 users) – In this adaptation of Edward Albee’s searing play, Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton play a married couple at each others’ throat all the time; a harsh film to watch, but a worthwhile one. Playing 6/29 at 8:00pm
Rebel without a Cause (1955; ranked #259 by 6035 users) – Pushing away his family, teenaged Jim Stark forms an ad hoc new one, with new girlfriend Natalie Wood and a sensitive, bullied boy played by Sal Mineo. Playing 6/15 at 8:00pm
Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958; ranked #456 by 1621 users) – Elizabeth Taylor abandoned her ingenue image for good as the sultry wife of Paul Newman in this Southern Gothic tale of estranged husbands and wives, and fathers and sons. Playing 6/16 at 12:00M

Star of the Month: Audrey Hepburn
For June’s Star of the Month, we get one of the most elegant and classy leading ladies of all time – her filmography isn’t particularly large, like some of the Stars of the Month are, but what’s there is choice. TCM runs the gamut, from early career British films that weren’t even in the Flickchart database (until now!) to her late-career films. Born to a British father and a Belgian Baroness mother, Hepburn spent her early years in London and Belgium, enduring quite some hardship during WWII in war-torn Belgium, but she quickly became a darling of the screen when she came to Hollywood and won an Oscar for her first American film, Roman Holiday. Her star never fell over the next three+ decades, and she remains an icon in the fashion world as well as the film world.
TOP FIVE
Roman Holiday (1953; ranked #208 by 4195 users) – Hepburn’s first American film won her an Oscar and vaulted her to instant stardom, playing a young princess who just wants to experience non-royal life for a change and runs away to do so. Playing 6/5 at 8:00pm
Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961; ranked #374 by 8924 users) – In maybe the quintessential ‘60s film, Hepburn plays Holly Golightly, a party girl whose insouciance hides a more melancholy interior. Swinging parties alternating with Moon River, what more could you ask for? Playing 6/12 at 8:00pm
Wait Until Dark (1967; ranked #415 by 1262 users) – Caught unawares in a smuggling scheme, Hepburn is a blind woman at a severe disadvantage to the criminals trying to get what she doesn’t even know she has – very effective thriller. Playing 6/19 at 10:15pm
My Fair Lady (1964; ranked #556 by 6816 users) – Though Julie Andrews originated the role of Eliza Doolittle on Broadway, she hadn’t yet made the jump to film (she would the same year with Mary Poppins), and the film producers wanted a more bankable name for the adaptation of the smash-hit musical – like Audrey Hepburn. And while it would’ve been fun to see Andrews in the film, it’s hard to complain about Hepburn, either. Playing 6/12 at 10:15pm
How to Steal a Million (1966; ranked #1093 by 487 users) – A breezy comedy in which Hepburn must somehow steal a priceless statue from a Paris museum before anyone finds out that it’s not actually a priceless statue, but a forgery by her father. Playing 6/19 at 8:00pm

Special Theme: European Vacation
Even if you’re not able to visit Europe during summer break this year, you can do the next best thing, with a bevy of movies set in London, Paris, Rome, and other olde worlde locales. In between the main features listed below, look out for short travelogues produced largely in the 1950s – I didn’t bother to list these out individually, but they’d be a fascinating piece of history to experience. These are left in the order of airing, because the program is very carefully designed around specific locations each evening.

Marathons & Tributes
Treasures from the Disney Vault
The first two of these are particular childhood favorites of mine, though I don’t hear too many people talking about them anymore. Mix in some animated fun and a couple of very obscure live-action horse movies, and it’s another stellar programming block from TCM and Disney.

Directed by Edgar G. Ulmer
Elmer is best known for his gritty Poverty Row noir film Detour and secondarily for his gothic horror The Black Cat, teaming Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi, but while he stayed on the low-budget side of the industry, his career was quite long and varied.

Marlene Dietrich
Marlene Dietrich was one of a few exotic seductresses to make big splash in Hollywood in the early 1930s, but TCM is focusing here on her later career, or shall we say, the non-Josef von Sternberg years. It might be said that she got even better in this era, showing herself to be a natural comedienne as well.

Powell & Pressburger
Branded as The Archers, Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger worked together to write and direct one of the most outstanding strings of movies ever made – this is just a section of it, but it’s a good one, showcasing their unfailing sense of style and brilliant visuals, in both color and B&W.

Astaire & Rogers
A lot of dancing teams have tried, but no one has matched the effortless grace and goofy charm of Astaire and Rogers. Two of these (Top Hat and Swing Time) are unassailable classics, but the others are admittedly better suited to fans.

Day by Day
Friday, June 2
Top Rated: The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934; ranked #1429 by 810 users) – Hitchcock’s original B&W version of the story he’d later remake in color – this time there’s more Peter Lorre and less Doris Day, which may be a major bonus for some people. Playing 6/2 at 3:30pm
Wild Card: Summer Magic (1963; ranked #10020 by 94 users) – A charming Disney live-action film with a turn of the century city family moving to a small town and dealing with all the accompanying joys and trials. Americana slice of life. Playing 6/2 at 8:00pm
Saturday, June 3
Top Rated: Brief Encounter (1945; ranked #216 by 974 users) – Playing 6/3 at 8:00pm
Wild Card: Cleopatra Jones (1973; ranked #8202 by 128 users) – Generally regarded as one of the better blaxploitation films; the titular character is a special agent helping local law enforcement with the war on drugs. Playing 6/4 at 4:15am
Sunday, June 4
Top Rated: Out of the Past (1947; ranked #146 by 1469 users) – For more on this highly acclaimed noir, see our recent post about the films of 1947, in which Out of the Past took the top-ranked spot. Playing 6/4 at 10:00am
Wild Card: A Tree Grows in Brooklyn (1945; ranked #4606 by 99 users) – A slice of life in early 20th century New York City, focusing on an imaginative young girl who idolizes her unstable father. Warm and tender throughout. Playing 6/4 at 8:00pm
Monday, June 5
Top Rated: The Kid (1921; ranked #162 by 1378 users) – Playing 6/5 at 7:30am
Wild Card: House on Haunted Hill (1959; ranked #1254 by 1287 users) – There’s not much more fun than Vincent Price in a haunted house movie, and when that haunted house movie is directed by the King of Gimmicks William Castle, it’s gleefully enjoyable. (The gimmick here – at a particular scene, a theatre employee would have loosed a skeleton on a wire into the midst of the audience.) Playing 6/5 at 10:45am
Tuesday, June 6
Top Rated: Detour (1945; ranked #1204 by 523 users) – Playing 6/7 at 2:15am
Wild Card: Midnight Mary (1933; ranked #12635 by 13 users) – We start by seeing Mary on trial for murder, then flash back to hear her story – it’s nothing too out of the ordinary for a Pre-Code drama, but it’s well-played and a great reminder that Pre-Code Loretta Young is the best Loretta Young. Playing 6/6 at 12:30pm
Wednesday, June 7
Top Rated: Giant (1956; ranked #549 by 1412 users) – Playing 6/7 at 10:15pm
Wild Card: The Man with the Golden Arm (1956; ranked #2047 by 351 users) – Frank Sinatra may have gotten his start as a crooner, but with dramas like this, he proved his acting chops beyond question. Playing 6/7 at 8:00pm
Thursday, June 8
Top Rated: Rope (1948; ranked #127 by 5252 users) – Playing 6/9 at 1:00am
Wild Card: Words and Music (1948; ranked #14929 by 28 users) – OKAY, this biopic of Rodgers and Hart (like most musical biopics) is not great. However, I’m recommending it for two reasons. The last on-screen pairing of Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney, just for a single number, but it’s super fun. And the extended dance sequence to Slaughter on 10th Avenue, with Gene Kelly and Vera-Ellen giving it all they’ve got, and they’ve got a lot. Playing 6/8 at 10:30pm
Friday, June 9
Top Rated: Bringing Up Baby (1938; ranked #132 by 3722 users) – Playing 6/9 at 4:45pm
Wild Card: The Kennel Murder Case (1933; ranked #5934 by 84 users) – Before William Powell played Nick Charles in the Thin Man movies, he played detective Philo Vance in a series of films, and this is one of the best – a lighthearted mystery that costars Mary Astor. Playing 6/9 at 12:00N
Saturday, June 10
Top Rated: The Lost Weekend (1945; ranked #375 by 1395 users) – Playing 6/10 at 8:00pm
Wild Card: Strike Up the Band (1940; ranked #8184 by 48 users) – The best Mickey Rooney/Judy Garland film is easily 1943’s Girl Crazy (thanks in no small part to Gershwin music), but I might just have to give second place to this “let’s put on a band concert” film. Playing 6/10 at 11:45am
Sunday, June 11
Top Rated: Sense and Sensibility (1995; ranked #1324 by 5187 users) – Uh-oh, TCM’s going modern! But when your “modern” is a Jane Austen story with an old-fashioned feel, who can complain too hard? I’m just kidding, I’m sure the TCM diehards are complaining plenty. Feel free to enjoy Sense and Sensibility, though. Playing 6/11 at 2:00pm
Wild Card: Phantom Lady (1944; ranked #6728 by 52 users) – This is a noir I’ve never heard of. Directed by noir staple Robert Siodmak – sign me up! Playing 6/11 at 10:00N
Monday, June 12
Top Rated: The Battle of Algiers (1966; ranked #227 by 958 users) – The Algerian War was a major and painful conflict for France and her former colony, and this documentary-style film captures the ambiguity and tension perfectly. Playing 6/12 at 1:45pm
Wild Card: The Nun’s Story (1959; ranked #4970 by 135 users) – This Audrey Hepburn film is one I haven’t seen, but it certainly doesn’t sound like your typical inspiration nun story – instead this nun goes through difficult training, work in the Congo, then a return to her native Belgium just in time for WWII. Playing 6/13 at 1:30am
Tuesday, June 13
Top Rated: Witness for the Prosecution (1957; ranked #225 by 1492 users) – Playing 6/14 at 2:00am
Wild Card: The Prisoner of Zenda (1952; ranked #9675 by 43 users) – Anthony Hope’s Prisoner of Zenda was a popular adventure novel back i the day, which was adapted into several swashbuckling films. This lavish color version is maybe not QUITE as good as the 1937 version, but it’s very close, and its visual sumptuousness goes a long way. Playing 6/13 at 4:00pm
Wednesday, June 14
Top Rated: A Matter of Life and Death (1947; ranked #178 by 607 users) – In an intriguing choice, Powell & Pressburger filmed the earthly section of this story in color and the heavenly section in B&W, as a downed fighter pilot argues for his life with the powers that be. Playing 6/14 at 8:00pm
Wild Card: I Know Where I’m Going (1945; ranked #1413 by 321 users) – An unassuming but still very excellent film from Powell & Pressburger, with a woman very sure of her life goals being thrown right off course by a storm and a handsome Scottish islander. Playing 6/15 at 2:00am
Thursday, June 15
Top Rated: North by Northwest (1959; ranked #28 by 26400 users) – Playing 6/159 at 5:30pm

Wild Card: The Defiant Ones (1958; ranked #1395 by 535 users) – Chained-together prisoners Tony Curtis and Sidney Poitier escape but must work together – in 1958, a racially-charged situation to be sure. Playing 6/17 at 6:00pm
Sunday, June 18
Top Rated: Chungking Express (1994; ranked #295 by 1223 users) – Another very new film for TCM to be playing, but I urge you to give this one a try, even if you’re usually a classics-only fan. It’s a visually gorgeous film, and while I wouldn’t call it old-fashioned, it has a sort of timelessness to it. Playing 6/19 at 2:00am
Wild Card: He Ran All the Way (1951; ranked #13371 by 17 users) – A criminally underseen film, John Garfield’s last before the McCarthy blacklist drove him out of Hollywood, and it’s a doozy of a desperate noir. Playing 6/18 at 10:00am
Monday, June 19
Top Rated: Wait Until Dark (1967; ranked #415 by 1262 users) – Playing 6/19 at 10:15pm
Wild Card: Secret People (1952; unranked by 0 users) – This is one of Audrey Hepburn’s early British films, and one of the rare ones where she plays more than a bit part. I’m very curious to check it out. Playing 6/20 at 1:45am
Tuesday, June 20
Top Rated: Dial M for Murder (1954; ranked #186 by 5006 users) – Playing 6/20 at 11:45am
Wild Card: Two Arabian Knights (1927; ranked #10609 by 41 users) – I don’t know a lot about this silent other than its director won the first Oscar for Best Director, and that bit of trivia is enough to catch my interest. Playing 6/21 at 2:30am
Wednesday, June 21
Top Rated: Harold and Maude (1971; ranked #232 by 5032 users) – Playing 6/21 at 8:00pm
Wild Card: The Band Wagon (1953; ranked #1644 by 380 users) – Fred Astaire. Cyd Charisse. Dancing.’Nuff said. Playing 6/21 at 8:00am
Thursday, June 22
Top Rated: Psycho (1960; ranked #42 by 59961 users) – Playing 6/23 at 3:00am
Wild Card: Gypsy (1962; ranked #4783 by 158 users) – Ostensibly a biopic of famous striptease artist Gypsy Rose Lee, it’s really more about her mother, the quintessential stage mother, who gets all the big numbers, and she gets some great ones. Playing 6/22 at 8:00pm
Friday, June 23
Top Rated: Roman Holiday (1953; ranked #208 by 4197 users) – Playing 6/24 at 2:45am
Wild Card: I Could Go On Singing (1963; ranked #9294 by 42 users) – Judy Garland’s final role, in which she plays a famous singer who visits her estranged son while his father is away, and all the emotional baggage that comes along with that. Playing 6/23 at 7:45am
Saturday, June 24
Top Rated: Rear Window (1954; ranked #11 by 32709 users) – Playing 6/24 at 8:00pm
Wild Card: The Window (1949; ranked #9710 by 31 users) – I have a soft spot for noirs that involve kids (The Fallen Angel is another great one); in this one, Bobby Driscoll sees a murder while sleeping out on a fire escape, but no one will believe him. Playing 6/24 at 10:15pm
Sunday, June 25
Top Rated: Places in the Heart (1984; ranked #2772 by 389 users) – Playing 6/25 at 6:00pm
Wild Card: Scaramouche (1923; ranked #10210 by 35 users) – From the novel by swashbuckling author extraordinaire Rafael Sabatini, this story has been filmed several times. I’ve never seen the silent version, but I would love to. TCM is also playing the 1952 version the following morning, so DVR that one as well if you want to see the longest sword fight in movie history. Playing 6/25 at 12:00M
Monday, June 26
Top Rated: Funny Face (1957; ranked #1327 by 723 users) – Playing 6/26 at 10:00pm
Wild Card: Robin and Marian (1976; ranked #3363 by 414 users) – After years serving King Richard I in his wars, Robin of Locksley returns to England to find himself a legend, the Merrie Men in decline, and Maid Marian in a convent. This elegiac film about the twilight years of Robin Hood is underseen and very good, especially for Robin Hood aficionados. Playing 6/27 at 6:00am
Tuesday, June 27
Top Rated: Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore (1974; ranked #1004 by 1124 users) – An unusual film for Martin Scorsese, a female-led road trip to self-enlightenment. Playing 6/27 at 6:00pm
Wild Card: The Harvey Girls (1946; ranked #3469 by 195 users) – A Judy Garland vehicle dramatizing the westward expansion of the railroad through the eyes of the Harvey Girls, waitresses who moved west to serve at the Harvey restaurants cropping up all along the railroad. Includes the Oscar-winning “On the Atcheson, Topeka, and the Santa Fe.” Playing 6/27 at 4:15pm
Wednesday, June 28
Top Rated: Island of Lost Souls (1932; ranked #984 by 333 users) – Charles Laughton is downright terrifying at times in this mad scientist story of a doctor doing horrifying experiments on men and beasts in the jungle. Playing 6/28 at 1:00pm
Wild Card: White Zombie (1932; ranked #3313 by 433 users) – For some reason voodoo zombies get my imagination fired up way more than post-Romero zombies, and this is no exception – the scene with a man being turned into a zombie as he sits there helpless is horrifying. Playing 6/28 at 11:45am
Thursday, June 29
Top Rated: Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966; ranked #231 by 1700 users) – Playing 6/29 at 8:00pm
