A Flickchart Guide to TCM in February (Part 1)
February is TCM’s annual 31 Days of Oscar (they go three days into March to accomplish that), wherein all of the films playing are Oscar nominees. This is a great month to catch up on great films, but there are also plenty of obscurities that got a nomination for, like, Best Sound Design in 1938 or something random like that.
This year they’ve decided to do the whole month in alphabetical order, which catches my fancy, and also means there are no spotlights, tributes, marathons or anything like that to feature, so I’m just going to go through it day by day highlighting the top ranked films, a double feature that relates to the top ranked one in some way, and a wild card that’s usually something much lower-ranked but worth seeking out. I’ve also included the genre and Top 1000 lists as usual, after the day-by-day.
Look for Part 2 mid-month!
Wednesday, February 1
Top Ranked: All About Eve (1950; ranked #123 by 4622 users) – Best Picture of 1950, and this tale of Broadway connivers still stands as one of the best-written and most entertaining Best Pictures ever. Playing on 2/1 at 8:00pm
Double Feature: The Asphalt Jungle (1950; ranked #478 by 1083 users) – Another 1950 film with Marilyn Monroe in a small part. John Huston, Sterling Hayden, Jean Hagen, and the aforementioned Marilyn Monroe bringing glamor to noir. Playing on 2/2 at 5:30am
Wild Card: Agatha (1979; ranked #11673 by 68 users) – In 1926, famed mystery writer Agatha Christie disappeared for eleven days. The disappearance was never explained, but here’s a fictional version of what might have happened. I haven’t seen this, but with Vanessa Redgrave as Agatha, I’m highly intrigued. Playing on 2/1 at 4:00pm
Thursday, February 2
Top Ranked: The Battle of Algiers (1966; ranked #232 by 917 users) – Trenchant look at the French-Algerian War, with Algerians fighting for their independence. No easy answers, lots to think about. Playing on 2/3 at 3:30am
Double Feature: Au revoir les infants (1987; ranked #601 by 737 users) – Another movie about the innocents hurt by war, as a new boy joins boys school in France. His secret: he’s Jewish, on the run from the Nazis. Playing on 2/2 at 7:30am
Wild Card: Bachelor Mother (1939; ranked #5396 by 85 users) – Delightful comedy showcasing Ginger Rogers at her best as a shopgirl mistaken for the mother of a young baby left outside an orphanage – so she’s forced to take care of him. Playing on 2/2 at 4:00pm
Friday, February 3
Top Ranked: The Best Years of Our Lives (1946; ranked #196 by 1786 users) – Returning to civilian life after war has rarely been treated as thoughtfully as in this William Wyler film that came out right on the heels of WWII. Timely then, and still relevant today. Playing on 2/3 at 11:30am
Double Feature: Ben-Hur (1959; ranked #733 by 15594 users) – William Wyler double feature! Follow his intimate yet broad ensemble film with one of the most epic epics that ever epicced. Playing on 2/3 at 7:45am
Wild Card: Blow-Up (1966; ranked #660 by 1231 users) – Not too much of a wild card, given its Top 1000 status (ranked higher than Ben-Hur!), but still, this is maybe a little off the radar of TCM’s core classic Hollywood fans. It’s well worth the effort – a low-key detective story transposing Michelangelo Antonioni’s disaffection into Mod London. Playing on 2/4 at 12:15am
Saturday, February 4
Top Ranked: Bride of Frankenstein (1935; ranked #186 by 2509 users) – This sequel to Frankenstein is often considered the best of the series, with a winning combination of horror and comedy, and a surprising and iconic role for Elsa Lanchester as the Bride. Playing on 2/4 at 10:00pm
Double Feature: Caged (1950; ranked #7376 by 46 users) – From Universal horror to the horror of a women’s prison – maybe a stretch, but Caged is a great film that deserves a far more devoted following than it has. Playing on 2/5 at 5:30am
Wild Card: Cabin in the Sky (1943; ranked #4331 by 128 users) – Hollywood was frustrating to say the least on the race front in the ‘40s – they occasionally made all-black films like this one, but they still tended to play on stereotypes, like this one. Still, the pleasure of seeing these talented performers given a rare opportunity to play leads and show their chops is worth it. Playing on 2/5 at 3:45am
Sunday, February 5
Top Ranked: Casablanca (1942; ranked #16 by 42247 users) – I don’t need to introduce Casablanca. Playing on 2/5 at 8:00pm
Double Feature: Citizen Kane (1941; ranked #28 by 35273 users) – Double feature connection: another film I don’t need to introduce. Playing on 2/6 at 12:15am
Wild Card: Camille (1936; ranked #4064 by 158 users) – For the longest time my only exposure to this film was that it’s the film Annie and Daddy Warlocks go to see in 1982’s Annie; but of course, it’s more than that – it’s one of the great tearjerkers of classic Hollywood, with Greta Garbo as a beautiful consumptive courtesan. Playing on 2/5 at 1:45pm
Monday, February 6
Top Ranked: Cool Hand Luke (1967; ranked #95 by 10256 users) – Paul Newman as a quiet rebel on a chain gang, failing to communicate, eating lots of eggs, and singing “Plastic Jesus” in the film’s best scene. Playing on 2/6 at 8:45am
Double Feature: The Deer Hunter (1978; ranked #204 by 22941 users) – This is a specious double feature choice, since I haven’t seen The Deer Hunter and I’m just assuming it appeals to the same kind of people as Cool Hand Luke. This is a post-Vietnam War drama with I think both war stuff and re-entry to civilian life stuff. Oh, and it won Best Picture. Playing on 2/7 at 12:30am
Wild Card: The Constant Nymph (1943; ranked #12914 by 13 users) – This was a hard film to see for a long time, but thankfully TCM seems to be playing it fairly regularly now. It’s an odd film, with a rather concerning relationship between Charles Boyer and Joan Fontaine (who is playing a teenager). Fontaine brings just the right tone to the part to balance the line between romanticism and, um, pedophilia. Playing on 2/6 at 6:45am
Tuesday, February 7
Top Ranked: The Dirty Dozen (1967; ranked #329 by 3924 users) – Who better to send in to murder Nazis than a bunch of convicted murderers? Nothing can go wrong with this. Well, I haven’t seen the movie, so don’t tell me if anything goes wrong with it. Robert Aldrich directing, though, is a major plus in my book. Playing on 2/7 at 10:15am
Double Feature: Doctor Zhivago (1965; ranked #676 by 3760 users) – Okay, the only connection here is Doctor Zhivago also takes place in wartime, but WWI and the October Revolution rather than WWII. Whatever. This is a sweeping epic romance done as only David Lean could do such things. Playing on 2/7 at 2:30pm
Wild Card: The Divorcee (1930; ranked #7551 by 76 users) – Norma Shearer became a force in the Pre-Code world playing liberated women like the titular divorcee; in the Post-Code world, she became typecast as the suffering noble woman, so the rediscovery of her Pre-Code career was a welcome corrective to her reputation among classic film fans. Playing on 2/7 at 1:00pm
Wednesday, February 8
Top Ranked: The French Connection (1971; ranked #175 by 7406 users) – Best Picture winner in 1971, a police thriller about the drug trade. Deliberate pacing gives way to one of the best car chases on film, and me wishing they made thrillers like this today. Playing on 2/8 at 12:00M
Double Feature: Foreign Correspondent (1940; ranked #588 by 771 users) – One of Hitchcock’s first American features is an easy one for him, a cat and mouse espionage thriller not too far removed from something like The 39 Steps, but that doesn’t make it any less fun or entertaining. Playing on 2/8 at 8:00pm
Wild Card: For Me and My Gal (1942; ranked #5517 by 77 users) – A sweet and gentle musical that transitioned Judy Garland from kid roles to adult ones, and also gave Gene Kelly his film debut. Playing on 2/8 at 2:00pm
Thursday, February 9
Top Ranked: Gone with the Wind (1939; ranked #502 by 30592 users) – The great Southern American epic may be a little tough to stomach in some ways today, as 1939 still had more than its fair share of racial stereotypes, but it remains one of the most sweeping and impressive achievements ever put on film. Playing on 2/9 at 12:00M
Double Feature: Giant (1956; ranked #559 by 1381 users) – GWTW is an epic of the Civil War, and Giant is a multigenerational epic of the twentieth century, as Texas ranches give way to Texas oilfields. Playing on 2/9 at 4:30pm
Wild Card: The Good Earth (1937; ranked #7783 by 85 users) – From the novel by Pearl S. Buck, an American child of missionaries in China who won a Nobel Prize for her portrayal of Chinese peasants in books like The Good Earth. Luise Rainer also won an Oscar (her second in a row) for her portrayal of O-Lan, a Chinese peasant whose family suffers from a famine. Playing on 2/10 at 4:00am
Friday, February 10
Top Ranked: The Grapes of Wrath (1940; ranked #302 by 2399 users) – John Ford’s adaptation of John Steinbeck’s classic dustbowl novel infuses the tale of migrant Okies with a noirish lighting scheme and a haunting performance from Henry Fonda. Playing on 2/10 at 8:00pm
Double Feature: Grand Hotel (1932; ranked #1369 by 485 users) – Yeah, there’s no real connection between these two. Still, Grand Hotel is a solid ensemble film, featuring a who’s who of MGM contract stars, all moving through the titular hotel, where “nothing ever happens.” Yeah, right! Playing on 2/10 at 2:45pm
Wild Card: The Great McGinty (1940; ranked #4627 by 100 users) – I’m embarrassed I haven’t seen this, as big a Preston Sturges fan as I am – it sounds quite relevant, too, dealing with a crooked politician whose aptitude for voting fraud garners him great power, until a moment of honesty threatens it all. Playing on 2/10 at 10:30pm
Saturday, February 11
Top Ranked: Harvey (1950; ranked #269 by 2704 users) – If anyone can put over the role of a grown man with a giant invisible rabbit friend, it’s James Stewart, and he does it charmingly. Playing on 2/11 at 11:45pm
Double Feature: Hail the Conquering Hero (1944; ranked #2450 by 143 users) – From quietly kooky to outright zany, in this Preston Sturges film, Eddie Bracken is discharged from the army for hay fever but manages to set himself up as the hero of his small town anyway. Playing on 2/11 at 6:00pm
Wild Card: The Harvey Girls (1946; ranked #3453 by 189 users) – An under the radar pick even for Judy Garland fans, but this is a personal favorite that I can’t stop recommending. Judy is a Harvey Girl, one of the waitresses going west to work in the Harvey restaurants along the train routes in the twilight of the Old West. Good songs, great supporting cast, and the western setting overcomes any other issues (like John Hodiak’s woodenness). Playing on 2/12 at 2:00am
Sunday, February 12
Top Ranked: The Heiress (1949; ranked #1755 by 203 users) – Olivia de Havilland’s second Oscar came for this film, as the unattractive (!) title character courted by Montgomery Clift – but her father (an imperious John Gielgud) thinks he’s only after her money. Playing on 2/12 at 8:30am
Double Feature: High Society (1956; ranked #2268 by 376 users) – Speaking of heiresses, High Society’s Tracy Lord (Grace Kelly, about to become a princess herself) isn’t to badly off as a member of the New England aristocracy, but her upcoming nuptials are interrupted by a reporter seeking a story (Frank Sinatra) and oh yeah, her ex-husband (Bing Crosby). Remake of The Philadelphia Story isn’t nearly as sparkling, but does have excellent Cole Porter songs. Playing on 2/12 at 10:30am
Wild Card: I Married a Witch (1942; ranked #3672 by 142 users) – Puritan Frederic March burns witch Veronica Lake at the stake in Salem; 200 years later, she comes back to torment his descendant (also Frederic March) but ends up falling for him. Cute and kind of bizarre. Playing on 2/12 at 11:45pm
Monday, February 13
Top Ranked: Jaws (1975; ranked #61 by 75346 users) – A shark terrorizes a New England beach. Playing on 2/13 at 10:15pm
Double Feature: Key Largo (1948; ranked #332 by 1825 users) – A hurricane terrorizes the Florida Keys – oh, and also gangster Edward G. Robinson terrorizes Lauren Bacall, Humphrey Bogart, and Lionel Barrymore. Playing on 2/14 at 12:30am
Wild Card: The Informer (1935; ranked #2781 by 245 users) – An Irishman rats out some IRA buddies of his in order to get enough money to emigrate to the USA and has to deal with the consequences. Victor McLaglen won an Oscar for the role, but the real star is the extremely Expressionist cinematography, tagging this Ford film as a proto-noir. Playing on 2/13 at 6:15pm
Tuesday, February 14
Top Ranked: The Lady Eve (1941; ranked #310 by 868 users) – After naive Henry Fonda figures out that Barbara Stanwyck is a card shark playing him for his father’s fortune, he dumps her, forcing her to take on the alter ego of Lady Eve Sidwich to get her revenge. Simply the greatest screwball comedy ever, don’t even come at me. Playing on 2/14 at 8:00pm
Double Feature: Libeled Lady (1936; ranked #1796 by 175 users) – One great screwball lady deserves another, and here she is – in this case, Myrna Loy is the rich young woman suing a newspaper for libel. Newspaper guy Spencer Tracy puts his friend William Powell up to romancing her, thus proving the libel is true (and, uh, thus not libel). It’s all very complicated, but very hilarious, with Jean Harlow along for the fun as well Playing on 2/14 at 9:45pm
Wild Card: La Ronde (1950; ranked #3362 by 129 users) – Only the French could make a movie that follows sex itself from person to person, creating a giant circle of life – and probably only Max Ophuls, master of the circular tracking shot, could fit form to content so perfectly. Playing on 2/14 at 4:00pm
Wednesday, February 15
Top Ranked: The Lost Weekend (1945; ranked #365 by 1360 users) – Best Picture of 1945, and the first movie to deal seriously with alcoholism. It plays a little creaky today because its seriousness comes across as over the top and a little campy, but it still has some pretty powerful scenes. Playing on 2/15 at 8:00pm
Double Feature: Lust for Life (1956; ranked #3737 by 190 users) – In The Lost Weekend, Ray Milland lusted for booze. Here, Vincent Van Gogh lusts for life. Yeah, okay, that’s a stretch. But whatever, Kirk Douglas plays the tortured artist, while Anthony Quinn won a supporting Oscar as Paul Gauguin. Playing on 2/16 at 1:30am
Wild Card: Love Me or Leave Me (1955; ranked #7998 by 100 users) – Doris Day mostly coasted along in slight musicals or slightly risqué comedies, but this film proves she was capable of more when asked of it. She’s real-life singer Ruth Etting, whose career was both supported and interfered with by her gangster boyfriend (James Cagney). Very hard-hitting musical for the time period. Playing on 2/15 at 11:15pm
