70,000 Flickcharters Pick Their Top 20 of 2010

During 2010, we received over 49 million rankings where movie fans have been placing new films from the year onto their lists and putting them up against the best movies of all time. This list culminates those rankings to generate the movies of 2010 that are highest ranked by all of the users of Flickchart. This list is only accurate up to the day this was published, so if you’re eager to see if things have changed, you can check the daily results at http://www.flickchart.com/charts/2010.

Don’t forget too that once you’re there, you can further filter the list to get the best of 2010 combined with any of your favorite actors or genres. Best animated movies of 2010? Check. Best Jonah Hill movies of 2010? Check. Best animated movies starring Jonah Hill of 2010? Check.

While there certainly may be some debate on what made the cut and where each film landed on the list that may not line up with your personal best of 2010, we’re surprised and interested to see such a wide variety of blockbusters, indie films, animated, documentary, comedy, sci-fi, and action make their presence this year. We’ve been making strides to improve the global rankings to be as accurate as possible, and we’ll have even more innovations on this front in the new year – along with a laundry list of new features we’ve got cooked up.

Your Flickchart Top 20: Gift or Curse?

If you’re an avid Flickcharter, you’ve no doubt got a list of hundreds — if not thousands — of films ranked. From your all-time favorites to the dregs of cinema that you only wish you could un-see, to those middle-of-the-chart, ho-hum, so-so films whose ranks, while fun to try and get into their proper order, become somewhat interchangeable as they all share a common air of mediocrity.

Indeed, when it comes to your Flickchart, do you truly care whether Movie #667 is better than Movie #668? Does it even matter if Movie #236 is better than Movie #247?

What about global rankings? Does it matter to you if Flickchart’s users have V for Vendetta ranked higher than There Will Be Blood? Or that District 9 ranks higher than Best Picture Oscar-winner The Hurt Locker? Be honest: Does it really, really concern you that The Dark Knight outranks Star Wars as the #1 movie of all-time? As a movie fan, you know this fact to be either true or false; global rankings can be very useful in helping you find good movies that you haven’t seen yet, but when it comes to the films you do and don’t like, they aren’t necessarily going to sway your opinion.

In fact, I’d be willing to bet that, for most Flickcharters, the only list that really matters is that one that stares you in the face every time you come to the site: your personal Top 20. It’s the list that’s on-screen every time you rank; either causing you to constantly question it, or reaffirm that yes, yes these are, in fact, my favorite movies of all-time. The cream of the crop. The films that will smack down any others they come against in your Flickchart rankings.

Flickchart for iPhone

So we’ve been working hard to release a small gift to all of our beta testers who’ve been extremely helpful over the past few months, and we’re very pleased to announce:

Flickchart for iPhone – http://iphone.flickchart.com

For those of you lucky enough to have an iPhone 3G (or the original iPhone), you now have a great way to get in some of those extra rankings while you’re waiting in the queue lines to see The Dark Knight, or during the agonizingly long 30 minutes of commercials playing before the movie starts.

This is a work-in-progress, but the core ranking functionality and the ability to view your top 20, as well as the global charts, are all in place.

We’ll be adding more features to this in the future while we also continue to dig in to all of the great suggestions you’ve been providing us on our Get Satisfaction page, and through your many excellent emails.
