Heaven’s Burning vs. The Girl on a Motorcycle

For Valentine’s Day, we have two movies about women who ditch their ho-hum hubbies and hit the road for romance.   Heaven’s Burning stars Russell Crowe and Youki Kudoh as lovers on the run after a bank robbery gone bad.  The Girl on a Motorcycle features a leather-clad Marianne Faithfull mounting a mean machine on an adventure to rendezvous with her paramour.   In both cases, the heroines entertain an idealized notion of their romantic situation that doesn’t turn out so well in reality.  Perhaps these can be viewed as Valentine’s Day cautionary tales, unless of course tragic love is more in line with your concept of romance.    Read the rest of this entry »
