Heaven’s Burning vs. The Girl on a Motorcycle

For Valentine’s Day, we have two movies about women who ditch their ho-hum hubbies and hit the road for romance.   Heaven’s Burning stars Russell Crowe and Youki Kudoh as lovers on the run after a bank robbery gone bad.  The Girl on a Motorcycle features a leather-clad Marianne Faithfull mounting a mean machine on an adventure to rendezvous with her paramour.   In both cases, the heroines entertain an idealized notion of their romantic situation that doesn’t turn out so well in reality.  Perhaps these can be viewed as Valentine’s Day cautionary tales, unless of course tragic love is more in line with your concept of romance.    Read the rest of this entry »

Academy Award winner Russell Crowe has been tapped to play Jor-El, the father of Superman, in director Zack Snyder‘s upcoming reboot Man of Steel. The casting of such a prominent actor in the role certainly brings back memories of Marlon Brando in Richard Donner‘s Superman.

Crowe joins a cast that already includes Henry Cavill as Kal-El/Superman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Kevin Costner and Diane Lane as Kal-El’s adoptive parents, the Kents, and Michael Shannon as the villain, Zod. The role of Jor-El’s wife, Lara, has yet to be announced, but Crowe’s Gladiator co-star, Connie Nielsen, is rumored to be up for the part.

Man of Steel is currently slated to begin production next month in Vancouver, aiming for a holiday 2012 release.
