Google has a fantastic video tribute to Saul Bass on their homepage today. Known for designing movie posters and title sequences for filmmakers including Stanley Kubrick, Martin Scorsese and Alfred Hitchcock, Bass’s work was incredibly unique in its minimalism and striking imagery.
The video is timed to celebrate Bass’s 93rd birthday. Bass died in 1996 in Los Angeles at the age of 75.
There’s no escaping the fact that, for the last several years, movie studios have gotten away from the art of a movie poster and settled for some of the most bland, generic and just-plain-godawful Photoshopped imagery to advertise their films.
Thank goodness, then, that Mondo is around to create genuine works of art based on well-loved movies, and new soon-to-be-classics. Now, here they are to save the day again, with new posters for Iron Man 3. Check them out. (Click on the images for higher resolution.)
It’s become a bit of a tradition for IMAX to offer an exclusive poster to audiences who make the effort to hit the midnight screening on opening night for big movies. Iron Man 3 will be no exception.
What’s great about this poster is that it is a poster for a comic book movie actually created by a comic book artist. British artist Jock has lent his pen to Judge Dredd and The Losers, and done covers for books featuring Batman, Daredevil and Hulk. His poster features the many Iron Men seen in the trailers that will feature in the film’s epic finale. Click on the image above for a larger version.
Iron Man 3, directed by Shane Black and starring Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce and Ben Kingsley as the villainous Mandarin, opens May 3. The exclusive poster will be available only to audiences at the 12:01 am shows at IMAX theaters. You can check here to see if your local theater is participating.
A few days before the ceremony, the folks at Mondo advertised to the press that they would be placing several posters for Oscar-nominated films up for sale during the broadcast of the 85th Annual Academy Awards. They previewed the new collection – their second annual – with posters for The Master, ParaNorman and Les Misérables, with the promise to unveil several more during the Oscar telecast.
Mondo is preparing for their 2nd annual poster series featuring artwork showcasing films nominated at the 85th Academy Awards. Three of the posters have been revealed online, with the promise that others will be available when they go on sale during the Oscar telecast. Check them out below.
