Flickchart Road Trip: Delaware

Welcome to the latest installment of Flickchart Road Trip, in which I’m starting in Los Angeles and “driving” across country, watching one movie from each state and posting about it once a week. The new movie I watch will go up against five movies from that state I’ve already seen, chosen from five distinct spots on my own Flickchart. Although I won’t tell you where the new movie actually lands in my chart (I don’t like to add new movies until I’ve had a month to think about them), I’ll let you know how it fared among the five I’ve chosen. What would happen when I finally arrived, and couldn’t find five movies I’d seen set in Delaware? What would happen when I couldn’t find three? It threatened all the assumptions — nay, the very foundation — of this blog series.
Movies To See Before You Die: Se7en

Well, it will certainly be remembered.
In 1995, sophomore feature-film director David Fincher and fledgling screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker unleashed Se7en upon an unsuspecting world, and movie thrillers have never been the same since. Se7en is, by turns, devastating and shocking, and populated by powerhouse performances and bravura directing. It’s ranked #18 on Flickchart’s list of the Best Movies of All Time, #4 among thrillers, #6 on my personal chart, and it features the single best-written ending I have ever seen. If, somehow, you have not seen this movie, and this ending has not been spoiled for you (it will not be here), avoid any discussions of Se7en you may come across until you can see it. Because Se7en is a Movie to See Before You Die… provided, at least, you have the stomach for it.

Sucker Punch: A Flickcharter’s Movie Review

You will be unprepared.
That’s a tagline full of promise, all right. Though I have to say, I never felt “unprepared”. There was very little in Zack Snyder‘s Sucker Punch that I didn’t expect in the wake of the trailers promoting this movie. It takes big event movies across multiple genres – a pinch of The Matrix, a heaping helping of Kill Bill, a splash of Terminator, a dose of Rambo, a dash of The Lord of the Rings, a dollop of Fight Club, a touch of Inception – and tosses them in a blender. The result is a movie that certainly looks cool, but with a narrative that may seem as cobbled-together as the visuals if you start to think about it too hard.

Criterion Commentaries: Being John Malkovich

I remember when I had just turned 14, and on Bravo was this TV Spot for a movie called Being John Malkovich. I had never heard of it, and I had no idea what it was about. All I knew was that the cast alone would guarantee that I would see it. The TV spot that guaranteed my viewing of it was this:
