When Ethan Coen and Joel Coen hired T. Bone Burnett to produce the music for their film, O Brother, Where Art Thou? perhaps no one could have foreseen that it would usher in a whole movement in Americana and bluegrass music.

That’s just what happened, though. It turned out that the art house viewers who went to see O Brother really enjoyed the “old timey” music that created so much of the film’s ambiance. Sales were through the roof; the album hit #1 on Billboard’s Top Soundtracks chart, Top Country Albums chart and even the Top 200 chart which covers all genres! The Recording Industry Association of America has certified it 8x platinum for shipment of 8 million units.

How will you rank December 22nd’s new films against some of the best movies ever made?

True Grit movie reviews and rankings

True Grit movie discussions and rankings

Thank you, Coen Brothers, because this was shaping up to be one of the most soulless slates of Christmas wide releases ever assembled. True Grit has a 96% on RottenTomatoes after 73 reviews and stars Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon and Josh Brolin.

Gulliver’s Travels – PG – watch the trailer

I really like Jack Black, but this reimagining of the classic story looks pretty terrible. Emily Blunt, Amanda Peet and Jason Segel round out the very solid cast.

Here are this week’s new DVD, Blu-ray, and Netflix Instant Watch titles. Obviously, Thursday’s Avatar release is the highlight of the week but the overall slate of releases is strong as well. Select films will include their Flickchart global statistics (where available), as well as three direct links to rank the title against similar movies (one good, one average and one bad) to help nail down where the movie belongs on your chart.

New This Week

Avatar – (Thursday, April 22 – Blu-Ray and DVD)

I broke a 32-month theater-free streak to see this one. Yeah, the tickets were free, but the effort of getting off the warm couch on a cold Midwestern Winter morning shows you the influence this one had on casual theater goers (I watch at least 2 movies a day, but usually from the comfort of my house). It’s a decent movie, but it’s going to be interesting to see how it plays on the small screen when you’ll focus more on the story than the visuals. You might want to exercise some caution buying this bare-bones disc, as a four-disc set is coming in November – although apparently there will be special codes in the box that will let you watch all the upcoming special features online over the coming months.

We picked a pretty lousy two week stretch to open this column with. Last week’s biggest release did $1.7 million at the US box office and this week’s hit $8 million. By all accounts Bad Lieutenant and Pirate Radio (aka The Boat That Rocked) are good movies, they just aren’t that sexy to kick a column off with (well, aside from stars Eva Mendes and January Jones).

So, here are this week’s new DVD, Blu-ray, and Netflix Instant Watch titles. Each film will include their Flickchart global statistics (when available), as well as three direct links to rank the title against similar movies (one good, one average and one bad) to help nail down where the movie belongs on your chart.
