New movies in theaters this week:

Dinner for SchmucksTrailer

Take a look at my review. Long story short, the movie is quite good.

Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty GaloreTrailer

I’m horribly embarrassed to admit that I’ve seen the first movie in the series. I had siblings under 10 at the time if that makes it any better.

Now that you’ve seen it (WHY?), do you need help ranking it? Click the links below to directly rank it against these similar movies of varying quality to see how it ranks against the best family movies of all time:

Charlie St. CloudTrailer

When a female Disney Channel star “grows up,” she’s expected to take on adult roles by getting naked but when it’s a male, he can be taken more seriously by starring in romantic, family dramas. That’s odd to me…

Throw away all your negative preconceived notions about this movie. Steve Carell’s haircut looks awful and the trailers don’t make it seem like anything special, but it’s actually a very solid comedy.

What’s new to the Blu-ray and DVD Release Schedule This Week?

Clash of the Titans

How does it stand up against the Best Movies of all time?

Flickchart Ranking: #4245
Times Ranked: 5007

You’d be hard-pressed to find a bigger mythology nut than me, so catching this (on a easy to see 2D Blu-ray) is a major priority. If you also dig on mythology and flicks, the book “The Ancient World in the Cinema” by an old professor of mine is a great read.

Repo Men

It’s Repo! The Genetic Opera but without the opera. Despite my massive love for musicals, I personally was not a fan of that flick but completely understand why 14 year old girls like it. This one looks like it’s much more “serious” and more of a straightforward action flick.

Operation: Endgame

Rob Corddry and Zach Galifianakis in a spy-thriller? That’s just crazy enough to work. The movie has an incredible ensemble cast and looks, to me at least, to be a fun way to kill a couple hours. Check out this clip for some proof of the funny.

Batman: Under the Red Hood

Animated superhero movies are the best. There’s nothing better to throw on one monitor, while I get some work done on the other. The only conceivable reason I would ever want kids is so I could buy movies like this without getting dirty looks when I get to be in my 40′s.

IP Man

Flickchart Ranking: #6749
Times Ranked: 287

The story of a very successful, real-life martial arts teacher. The man taught Bruce Lee everything he knew, so hopefully there’s an interesting movie in there somewhere. Flickcharters seem to be responding to it very positively so far, so I’m guessing it’s worth a look.

The Art of the Steal

How does it stand up against the Best Movies of all time?

Flickchart Ranking: #11835

Documentary about the struggle to control a $25 billion private art collection. The collection was started by a dude who made his money creating a treatment for a sexually transmitted disease in the 1800′s. Flickchart rankings aren’t great right now but it looks interesting.

New to Theaters this Week:

More or less The Bourne Identity but with a female in the lead. Thankfully, that female is Angelina Jolie, hopefully making the movie fun and watchable.

Disney’s current flavor of the month, Selena Gomez, in an adaptation of the best-selling books by Beverly Cleary.

Limited Release Movies:

Valhalla RisingTrailer

From the director of the very solid movie Bronson, comes a vicious looking Viking movie. Watch the trailer, the movie looks gorgeously brutal. It currently is winning 65% of Flickchart battles.

Life During WartimeTrailer

A quasi-sequel to Todd Solondz’s Happiness. I’ve never seen that movie but am aware of its reputation as a comedic and disturbing look at life.

FarewellTrailer

Ronald Reagan called the event this flick is based on, “one of the most important espionage cases of the 20th century.” It’s been playing around festivals and has a 63% win rate on Flickchart right now.
