Prince of Persia: The Sands of TimeTrailer

I’m not super-excited for Prince of Persia but I’m not against it either. Jake Gyllenhaal can be a decent actor sometimes, and he’s certainly not unattractive to watch on the big screen.

Sex and the City 2Trailer

I imagine the feeling I get when I think of this movie is the same my wife gets when I pop in Point Break every couple weeks. Also, this movie is 146 minutes long, which is absolutely bananas. That’s 30 minutes longer than Prince of Persia.

Wide Releases:

MacGruberTrailer

If it wasn’t for next week’s Micmacs, this would be my most anticipated comedy of the summer. Don’t let my top 20 fool you, I am a huge fan of big, dumb action comedies like this. It’s a weakness I have. This has the potential to earn a spot next to the likes of Hot Fuzz for movies I have to watch at least once a month while “working” from home.

Shrek Forever AfterTrailer

How is the title not “Fourever After”? The ad wizards really dropped the ball there. Is anybody excited for this one after the mediocre mess that was number 3?

My life as a film fan has been in a lot of ways like Forrest Gump. It started slow due to my small town setting, and I went through some spells where it seemed I’d never think straight (I saw Bird on A Wire on the big screen, and I’m pretty sure I enjoyed it). I also was thrown into the serious stuff while still young and naive (It’s cool that I compare seeing Terminator 2 as a 10-11 year old as Unforgiven is to the Vietnam War, right?), and often couldn’t understand the nuances of many “normal” things (What’s the appeal of Hook again?). Like Forrest, I worked hard to get past my restraints: I guarantee that I’ve seen more foreign films than the rest of my hometown combined. But when I’d accomplished what I wanted to, I went back to my Jenny.

That Jenny is, and always will be, my love for genre cinema. I’ve specialized in horror films, but have also found far too much joy in science-fiction, action, and even western films. While this is more than enough to make my potentially simple mind happy, it does occasionally make things difficult for the part of me that’s a student of cinema.

It’s a fantastic week to have Netflix Instant Watch; easily the best since I began writing this weekly post. Amongst a bunch of other solid titles, the excellent District 9, the surprisingly great Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, and the wonderful Amelie are added on Saturday the 21st. There are a few nice titles being released on DVD/Blu-ray as well, take a look:
