"This is an intriguing matchup on so many levels: Director – von Trier vs. Spielberg; Unlikely Casting for Lead Role – Icelandic Pop Star Bjork vs. Standup Comedian Whoopi Goldberg (before her movie career took off); Female Protagonist in the Worst Predicament – Selma vs. Celie; etc. Although The Color Purple is more conventional and accessible, I’m giving a slight edge to Dancer in the Dark for its originality and being “out of the box”. I don’t recall whether another musical tragedy has been put on film, especially one as grim as this one, but somehow von Trier pulls it off."
